    1. http://www.eggblogg.co.uk/2009/07/using-speech-bubbles-to-get-your-point-across.html

    2. highlight the heading text
Using 'speech bubbles' to get your point across

    Bug

Pencil icon is missing, and so:

    * no contextual menu, and so
    * the highlight can not be edited or deleted
    * notes can not be stuck.

    Environment

    Diigolet 4.0b14
    Safari 4.0.3 (6531.9) in Mac OS X

Safari Web Inspector view of the bug

    Workaround

    1. my library

    2. seek and find the bookmark

    3. find the highlight

    4. remove

    5. click the title of the bookmark

    6. wait for the page to load

    7. load Diigolet and prepare to re-draw the highlight.

    Bugged: various highlights at http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/dscl.1.html
    * no pencil icon, no contextual menu, so again:

    - I can't delete highlights
    - I can't stick notes!

    Postscript — 2009-11-01

Today using Diigolet 4.0b14 with the same page:

    * no problem with any of the highlights.

(Incidentally: using my library in management view, I deleted a duplicate highlight, but that duplicate persists in Diigolet.)

Today using Diigolet 4.0b14 with the same page:

    * no problem with any of the highlights.

Bugged: uppermost highlights at http://blog.bookoven.com/2009/09/17/spam-poetry/ and http://blog.bookoven.com/2009/09/17/book-shelves/
    - the pencil icon is barely visible.

    Bugged: Identi.ca microblogging conversations.

I can't work with two of my highlights at http://identi.ca/conversation/11986841#notice-12006606

Bugged: http://seesmic.com/ after drawing a highlight over the word 'Desktop' there's no pencil icon, no contextual menu.

  • Graham Perrin

Bugged in a slightly different way (and so I have edited the title of this topic):

    At http://identi.ca/conversation/12018048#notice-12027915
as usual with Diigolet 4.0b14 the last highlight had:
    * a speech bubble
    * with the number '1' (one note stuck)
    * but no contextual menu.

If I set Safari to zoom text only, then zoom in massively, I can 'force' the pencil icon to appear but still:

    * the menu is missing:

Bugged: at http://n2.nabble.com/Try-out-the-iGoogle-Quick-Entry-widget-td3100144.html#a3822970 nearly all of the pencil icon is hidden. I can get the contextual menu if I hover very carefully in the tiny area (maybe two pixels deep) that is visible.

    Bugged: uppermost highlight at http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/google_wave_reactions.php
    - pencil icon is completely hidden, no menu …

If I set Safari to zoom text only, then zoom in massively, no pencil icon appears; if I imagine where the icon might be, its menu appears, but the massive zoom creates a mess in which a single menu item extends across multiple check boxes:

Bugged: the one highlight at http://twitter.com/CarrieFFisher
    - no pencil icon, no menu

  • Graham Perrin

Bugged: at http://identi.ca/doc/im the two highlights that have notes do show the speech bubble with the number '1' (for the one and only note) but:

    * NOTES DO NOT APPEAR :-(
    * impossible to add a second note :-(
    * impossible to change colour after adding the one and only note :-(

Bugged: my most recent highlight at http://tweetdeck.uservoice.com/pages/1192-general/suggestions/158168-ssl-for-integrated-profile-viewing?ref=title
    - pencil icon seems to be completely hidden
    - no contextual menu
    - (yellow highlight on yellow background is nearly invisible, I want to change the colour)

Bugged: my first highlight at http://www.bing.com/twitter/
    - pencil icon seems to be completely hidden
    - no contextual menu

Bugged: at least one of my highlights at http://freelanceswitch.com/productivity/let-diigo-turn-the-net-into-your-notebook/
    - pencil icon seems to be completely hidden
    - no contextual menu

    Postscript — 2009-11-01

Today using Diigolet 4.0b14 with the same page:

    * no problem with any of the highlights
    * maybe I used an alternative UI to remove or work around the bugged one.

Bugged: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/statusnet_could_point_to_the_future_of_business_intelligence.php and (as if you can't guess) I'm increasingly fed up with the failures of what used to be an extremely reliable tool.

I am reminded of the comment from Branislav Blesák around four weeks ago:

    > the worse thing is the floating button that appears
    > when you hover over a highlight is appearing at
    > random places, mostly way above the highlight.
    > And so does the highlight menu.

    Some examples from 24th October:

A few more examples of the bug added to the screen shots at http://www.wuala.com/Diigo-4/986182

More examples to follow. A most annoying bug. The old Diigolet was far more reliable.

Another example of the bug added to http://www.wuala.com/Diigo-4/986182

    Seven more examples:

    Bugged:

    http://github.com/fschulze/mr.developer/issues#issue/9

    > Checkout in a fresh buildout

    http://github.com/fschulze/mr.developer/issues#issue/11

    > Unable to check out git repositories

Only one or two pixels are showing. The vast majority of the icon is missing.

Many other examples, I tire of reporting them.

Diigolet 4.0b14 is very unfriendly compared to the 3.x series :(

Bugged: http://www.independent.ie/national-news/immune-cell-injection-offers-patients-hope-of-cancer-cure-1084397.html - I can not colour, or stick a note to, the highlighted headline.
  • Graham Perrin

Bugged: http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2010/04/an_update_on_staying_up-to-dat.html and other pages in the ASSET area — I can not colour, or stick a note to, the highlighted headlines.

I really, really miss the simplicity and reliability of the 3.x versions of Diigolet.

4.x is much more clunky and fiddly.

I've forwarded the collection of bugs to our engineer's attention who specialises in this this area. The bug-fix project is in progress. Thank you for submitting those bugs and helping us to improve from the perspective of users.

    Sandy and all, many thanks.

I strongly recommend moving some way back towards the behaviour of highlights and menus that was normal to Diigo 3.x.

Requiring the user to move away from the highlight, to work with the highlight, is very unergonomic (and seems to be fraught with problems).

The Diigo 3.x approach, allowing the menu to drop from the highlight (not from some way away from the highlight) was intuitive and easier, and I never had such problems with it :)
