I've been thinking about how some of the Diigo tools can help students to become a more thoughtful, slower, more considered process. "Carr goes on to argue that reading online---the most prominent form of reading for many---has devolved into nothing more than "power browsing," a horizontal trip through text characterized by skimming in search of content that is immediately engaging and accessible. Concentration is irrelevant to the online reader, as new pathways are only a quick click away. "Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words," writes Carr, "Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski." " I agree that students tend to skim and perhaps look for nuggets they can use in their own writing when they read online. Changing this is what I want to use Diigo for.

"The donut chain conducted a survey that shows that more than half of all Americans will take a nap over this Thanksgiving holiday. But Dunkin', which has begun pushing their coffees in addition to their donuts, says we don't need the nap. That's why their stores are staying open until 2 p.m. on Thursday to provide those looking to stay alert with some ammo." This really made me laugh because DD actually took a survey and is going to the extent where they're going to stay open until 2am selling people coffee.

My current inquiry question is about the legendary sea monster named Lochness. This podcast that I'm listening right now is about a discovery of an ancient long-necked creature named Dinosuffulosaurus, that inhabited the seats of what is now southeast China. The physical features of this creature looks strikingly similar to that of Loch Ness. The interviewer describes this creature as," Imagine an egg, a little bit squashed that is about 3 feet long. And on the front end of that, stick a neck that is about 5 feet long and about 3 inches in diameter. On the end of that put a head that is about 5 inches long. It's a very elongated neck head relative to the size of the body. The back end would've been a tail too but we don't know how big that was because it's not on this fossil." He had also compared the creatures neck to a Giraffes, however it's neck is more slender and long. He comes from a family of the Plesiosaur. What's most interesting is that the creature is not a dinosaur and is often mistakened as on. It is actually a marine reptile. They go on talking about the reptile's neck and what it's use was for. Unlike other reptiles/dinosaurs that possessed a long neck, Dinosuffollosaurus' neck was stiff. They say that reason for its long neck was to deceive their preys to think that they weren't as big as they were until it was too late. This method of feeding is called suction feeding, which is commonly used by many of the sea animals, such as fishes. The creature's fossil is currently in China and is placed there for further

For example, try looking for Creative Commons licensed videos of dogs made after 1st January 2009 and you’ll see all that information listed above your search. Over time, we’ll bring more and more advanced features directly into the page.

Father Flynn's Light - New Journalism - 0 views

  • Not much happens in “The Sisters,” the first story in James Joyce’s Dubliners.  Some of the meaning in the story comes from descriptions of the light in and around the house where the town’s old priest, Father Flynn’s body lies.  Other meanings come through the characters’ memories of the priest, expressed through incomplete dialog and longer reveries by the narrator. Additional meanings can be surmised from the vocabulary, some of the specific words Joyce uses in the story, “like the word gnomon in the Euclid and the word simony in the Catechism.”
    • Paul Allison

The idea of looking for meaning in the descriptions of the light came to me pretty quickly. Then I realized that I could find other aspects of the story where meanings come through: characters' dialog and internal monologue of the narrator; and in the use of language. I started to see that this initial paragraph could make my whole argument in short hand. Then I would develop these themes in the remainder of the writing.
    • Paul Allison

This essay began as a set of notes that I put on a Book Glutton version of Dubliners. I'm reading there this summer to see how it works. Then I copied the notes into a Google Doc, and I organized them and re-wrote them into this essay. With this essay I'm trying to figure out what I mean when I ask students to create a close reading of a text. What exactly are we asking students to do? We're not asking them to do research. Instead we are asking them to "use the language of the literature" (as an MIT professor put it in her syllabus ) n their own analysis of the particular, representative and evocatve sections of the text.
  • The narrator, a young man is introduced in the first paragraph as someone on vacation. He has had some sort of relationship with the man who at that point lies paralyzed inside his house after he has had his third stroke. It’s night when the story starts and the narrator is out for his regular evening walk. The narrator doesn’t feel invited into outside the house, but he also has a morbid attraction to what is happening with the man who has had the stroke.
    • Paul Allison

This paragraph was a slight revision from the note I posted on the first paragraph on Book Glutton. I like the way this paragraph follows the arc of the story, not revealing much about the story beyond what we know in the first paragraph. It tries to explain the meanings we can gather from the descriptions that Joyce give us in that first paragraph.

I took a gander at this quote. The immigrant said that he loves his town, and his friends and he would like to stay in mexico. This is perfectly understandable. America makes it seem as though once your in,there is nothing else. There was nothing before and there wont be anything after. There are countries of equal significance or even more. All we have to do is look a bit further and we will see the truth.
  • My name is Joel Silva. I'm born in the United States. I'm a USA citizen, but I live in Mexico all my life. When I'm 12 years old, my mom, she send me to buy, like, beans, like, potatoes that she pulled in the United States.

  • But my purpose to learn English to testify who is God, who is Jesus Christ
    • Luis EWSIS

This is so an obscure note, what does learning English has anything to do with testifying who is God and how can he testify who is God? No one can testify something that is beyond human understanding such as the notion of creation and the existence of a God, if in the first place He does exist
  • We've got 40,000 to 50,000 on our peak time, people coming across.

I had no idea so many people legally crossed the borders in one day. I always thought by the stereotypical way people always talked about it, that only illegal immigrants could come in because it was so difficult for people to do it legally.
    • Helen EWSIS

Wow, 40000 to 50000 people a day during peak time along just to cross the border for work is more than said for. I can imagine a line of cars waiting to get through the border every morning and evening. Like an never ending line of people, thirsty, hungry and exhausted.
  • HOSALIN: This my other home right here.
    • Jessica =D

This quote makes a lot of sense. Anyone who spends the majority of time in a certain are (like students in school) consider that place to be their second home. But with these peoples hours, it may even be their first homes. o_O
  • But when I got out, back to work.
    • Nicole EWSIS

I found this extremely shocking because I can not believe that someone could get committed for a crime and still work as a legal immigrant in the USA.
  • Mayor ESCAMILLA: Right now, we're on Main Street and you can see that there's some farm workers right now.
    • Nicole EWSIS

I found this interesting because when I go to main street I only see Asian families and people. I see markets and small business, but in Arizona Main st is full of Mexican farmers and immigrants
  • Tens of thousands of Mexicans legally cross every day. Many pick produce in southern Arizona's vast farm fields, and all of them cross the border on San Luis's Main Street.

That is a really long time to be working. I don't think I could do that.
    • Helen EWSIS

I agree with Nicole, that is more than a normal working day of a 9-5 job. 14 to 16 hours a day is intense work. I'd be tired, hungry and bored.

The life of people on Main Street in Arizona is very different from ours. They focus a lot more on farming jobs. Though the lifestyles are different, we both have our own special things.
  • And usually at three o'clock in the morning you'll see the buses that park in the business parking lot. They'll just park there and wait for the workers.

Moon landing conspiracy theories - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 4 views

I wonder if conspiracy theorists think these things up in order to gain something
  • An article in the German magazine Der Spiegel places the Moon hoax in the context of other well-known 20th century conspiracy theories which it describes as "the rarified atmosphere of those myths in which Elvis is alive, John F. Kennedy fell victim to a conspiracy involving the Mafia and secret service agents, the Moon landing was staged in the Nevada desert, and Princess Diana was murdered by British intelligence."[41]

  • A number of different hoax claims have been advanced that involve conspiracy theories outlining concerted action by NASA employees, and sometimes others, to perpetuate false information about landings that never occurred, or to cover up accurate information about the landings that occurred in a different manner than have been publicized. Believers have focused on perceived gaps or inconsistencies in the historical record of the missions. The Flat Earth Society was one of the first organizations to accuse NASA of faking the landings, arguing that they were staged by Hollywood and based on a script by Arthur C. Clarke.[13]

One of the old tapes has been sent to NASA for analysis. The slow-scan television images were not on the tape.[67] Britain's Sunday Express reported in late June 2009 that the missing tapes were found in storage facility in the basement of a building on a university campus in Perth, Australia.

This is the general definition of what aliens are. They are known as extraterrestrial life that do not live on Earth, but oter space. The last sentence is important because, scientists are still trying to prove the existence of aliens.
  • Suggested locations which might have once developed, or presently continue to host life similar to our own, include the planets Venus[1] and Mars, moons of Jupiter and Saturn (e.g. Europa,[2] Enceladus and Titan) and Gliese 581 c and d, recently discovered to be near Earth-mass extrasolar planets apparently located in their star's habitable zone, and with the potential to have liquid water.[3]

This is important because this is proof that extraterrestrial life existed in outer space, more specifically Mars.
    • JosephT EWSIS

This isn't proof at all. It says possibly, and it says that there is a lack of evidence.
  • In February 2005, NASA scientists reported that they had found strong evidence of present life on Mars.[21] The two scientists, Carol Stoker and Larry Lemke of NASA's Ames Research Center, based their claims on methane signatures found in Mars' atmosphere resembling the methane production of some forms of primitive life on Earth, as well as on their own study of primitive life near the Rio Tinto river in Spain.
  • Within Islam, the statement of the Qur'an "All praise belongs to God, Lord of all the worlds" indicates multiple universal bodies, and maybe even multiple universes, which may indicate extraterrestrial and even extradimensional life. Surat Al-Jinn also mentioned a statement from a Jinn regarding the current status and ability of his group in the heavens.
    • Reasat EWSIS

This is interesting because I am a Muslim my self. A lot of things can have different interpretations. I am going to try looking for it in the Qur'an.
  • Europa - Europa may contain liquid water beneath its thick ice layer. It is possible that vents on the bottom of the ocean warm the ice, so liquid could exist beneath the ice layer, perhaps capable of supporting microbes and simple plants, just like in Earth's hydrothermal vents.[2]
    • Reasat EWSIS
  • Mars - Life on Mars has been long speculated. Liquid water is widely thought to have existed on Mars in the past, and there may still be liquid water beneath the surface. Methane was found in the atmosphere of Mars. By July 2008, laboratory tests aboard NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander had identified water in a soil sample. The lander's robotic arm delivered the sample to an instrument which identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples. Recent photographs from the Mars Global Surveyor show evidence of recent (i.e. within 10 years) flows of a liquid on the Red Planet's frigid surface.[34]
  • The other large moons of our system which have been visited appear similarly lifeless, though the interesting geothermic forces observed (Io's volcanism, Europa's ocean, Titan's thick atmosphere) have underscored how broad the range of potentially habitable environments may be.

It is very important for an overweight child to engage in physical activity as it can help improve their health and lose weight. The key to fighting obesity is to exercise daily and maintain a healthy eating habit.

    • Ammy EWSIS

A child's weight is highly influenced by their food choices and family meals. It plays a critical role on their diet.Hence if a parent lets their own child make their own food choices, then that wouldn't be good since kids enjoy eating junk food and fast food, which doesn't do any justice to their bodies. Instead, they should be eating healthy nutritious foods such as vegetables and fruits. It is important for the parent to be in charge of what their child consumes. I found out from another source that studies have shown that almost all childs who are overweight, are due to their parents giving them control over what they want to eat.
  • Breast-feeding for example may protect against obesity in later life with the duration of breast-feeding inversely associated with the risk of being overweight later on.
    • Ammy EWSIS

How does breast feeding contribute to preventing child obesity? Where are the facts to support this?
  • Stress can influence a child's eating habits.
    • Ammy EWSIS

I agree because sometimes when people are stressed, they tend to eat a lot, because eating usually makes them feel better and happier.
    • Ammy EWSIS

However, in some case, its different for other people. For example, females are very conscious about their own body appearance. They are very strict to themselves when it comes to having a nice body image. When influenced by a magazine model to look thin, they would binge and not eat; which later on leads to a serious case of anorexia.
  • Childhood obesity however can also lead to life-threatening conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep problems, cancer, and other disorders.[6][7] Some of the other disorders would include liver disease, early puberty or menarche, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, skin infections, and asthma and other respiratory problems.
    • Ammy EWSIS

Yes this is very true. Child obesity can lead to any of these risky factors.
  • Many children fail to exercise because they are spending time doing stationary activities such as playing video games or watching TV. TV and other technology may be large factors of physically inactive children.

Haiti's history as first black republic creates a special bond with many African-Americ... - 0 views

  • Under French rule, Haiti's abundant sugar plantations made it perhaps the richest colony of the Caribbean. The slave rebellion began about 1790 and a leader soon emerged: Toussaint L'Overture. After years of fierce fighting, L'Overture was captured by Napoleon's forces and died in France. The rebellion lived on, and Napoleon's mighty forces were defeated. Haiti declared itself a nation on Jan. 1, 1804. For years to come, however, Haiti would pay reparations to France. The loss of Haiti's riches and strategic location was part of Napoleon's decision to sell the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. In America, where blacks were still seeking freedom, there was pride and wonder that Haitians had seized their destiny. This left an indelible imprint on African-American culture.

The history that is suggested here is very important. There's a lot of "looking the other way" racism in the U.S. response to the revolution that isn't mentioned here, too.
  • America occupied Haiti from 1915 until 1934, then supported a series of dictators until 1990. Today, Haitian refugees are treated differently than those from other nations, which many believe is partially due to race.

Doubting Darwin: Debate Over The Mind's Evolution : NPR - 0 views

shared by Luis EWSIS on 14 Jan 10 - Cached
  • These days, some Darwin skeptics are focusing on the human brain. They say a higher power must be involved; otherwise, how could a bunch of cells produce such complicated mental processes as consciousness or subjective experiences? How could something like free will be the result of evolution?
    • Luis EWSIS

Here, a great problem concerning the mind has brought great debate. Questions about the human mind and its capacity has overwhelmed humanity for many years. Yet, there is still no answer. Many theories attepmt to take a view on the issue but they are too ofeten criticized with things that are still unexplainable.
  • "If you change the brain, you change the mind. If you damage the brain, you damage the mind. If you turn off the brain, you turn off the mind," he says."And now with more sophisticated tools, when we're looking at brain function with functional MRI, for example, we can see that brain activity precedes mental activities — and that makes sense, because causes come before their effects."
    • Luis EWSIS

The fact that brain activity comes before mental activity is a very interesting evidence that our rationale is the effect of nerves and cells and thus provide an insight to the physical quality of conciousness rather than just assuming that consciousness is separate from our physical body as if the body were to be possesed by a conscious soul.
  • "I'm a neurosurgeon. I realize how closely the mind and the brain are related," Egnor says. "But the question is, is there something else, in addition to the material properties of the brain, that we need to invoke to have an adequate explanation for the mind? And I think there is."Egnor says that an intelligent designer was involved in producing not only the brain but all living things and certain features of the universe. Without this designer, the brain would be just a meat computer made up of brain cells, he says."There is nothing about neurons that scientifically would lead you to infer consciousness from them. They're masses of gelatinous carbon and hydrogen and nitrogen and oxygen, just like other kinds of flesh. And why would flesh have first-person experience? So, even logically, it doesn't hang together."
    • Luis EWSIS

Here is the argument for creationism, a way to push the question to a supreme being as the only explanation of something we are ignorant of. I do not mean to say that it is wrong; in fact it "might" be true, but this answer is as good as a simple "I don't know." There was a lecture on psychology I saw and it says that the idea of creationism is just "unsatisfying and unhelpful" which means a lot when we're trying to find a solution that can really help us understand the workings of our mind.
