» 3 simple tips for setting up online communities Learning in the Social Workplace - 1 views

  •
But we stressed the importance of letting go, and I repeated Dan Pink's words from my presentation: "Control leads to compliance; autonomy leads to engagement". We explained this would likely prove to be a far more successful approach than imposing a community on the team.  In other words the group needs to "own" its own community.

On the Identity Trail - Lessons From the Identity Trail - 0 views

  •
During the past decade, rapid developments in information and communications technology have transformed key social, commercial, and political realities. Within that same time period, working at something less than Internet speed, much of the academic and policy debate arising from these new and emerging technologies has been fragmented. There have been few examples of interdisciplinary dialogue about the importance and impact of anonymity and privacy in a networked society. Lessons from the Identity Trail: Anonymity, Privacy and Identity in a Networked Society fills that gap, and examines key questions about anonymity, privacy, and identity in an environment that increasingly automates the collection of personal information and relies upon surveillance to promote private and public sector goals.

Tim O'Reilly On What OpenCourseWare Can Learn From the Open Source Movement - 1 views

  •
This week the OCW Consortium is holding its annual meeting, celebrating 10 years of opencourseware. Are universities about credentials or research? Are they a repository of knowledge? It's important, O'Reilly argued, if you want to be innovative "to think about what job you do for your customers (for your students) and not just think about how you do that job today but why you do it."

Pearson Free LMS: Freeing the LMS - Inside Higher Ed - 1 views

  •
In a move that could shake the e-learning industry, Pearson today unveiled a new learning management system that colleges will be able to use for free, without having to pay any of the licensing or maintenance costs normally associated with the technology. Pearson's new platform, called OpenClass, is only in beta phase.  By providing complimentary customer support and cloud-based hosting, OpenClass purports to underprice even the nominally free open-source platforms that recently have been gaining ground in the LMS market. "I think that the announcement really marks another, and important, nail in the coffin of the proprietary last-generation learning management system," says Lev Gonick, CIO of Case Western Reserve University.

Google and the AND or the OR or the Plus + Search changes but also instructive on the attitude and way that Google makes decisions about change.  It might be really important to you but being part of 10% of a user base that likes versus 90% who don't like or are indifferent means you've lost.

  • we lead students rather than dispense knowledge to them. We become the bridge between students and content rather than the source of the content. It is a perhaps subtle change but nevertheless important because it means taking on different responsibilities.
  • Strategies that support this shift in perspective include having the students moderate discussion forums, prepare concept summaries and examples for other students, and assume greater responsibility as frontline moderators for the course (Boettcher, 2007).
