How tech can result in bad outcomes through external bias and social failures. We can forget that there is more to tech than it being "just some software."

I think this is an important stating of the assumptions built into technology and the outcomes resulting from these assumptions and inherent biases. If we emphasize the consequences of differential access, we see one facet of the digital divide; if we ask about how these consequences are produced, we are asking about digital redlining. The Department of Education's (ED) Office of Educational Technology today released a draft issue brief - Enhancing Teaching and Learning Through Educational Data Mining and Learning Analytics - representing the results of a months-long discourse among 8 academic and 15 industrial data mining and learning analytics experts conducted by SRI International. The brief, inspired by ED's 2010 National Educational Technology Plan (NETP), articulates the challenges and opportunities of Big Data in improving student outcomes and overall productivity of K-2 education systems. It focuses on three key research areas - educational data mining, learning analytics, and visual data analytics - and offers a set of corresponding recommendations, categorized by various stakeholders. ED is now seeking public comment on the draft.

The core proposition is that with the unprecedented amounts of digital data now becoming  available about learners' activities and interests, from educational institutions and elsewhere online, there is significant potential to make better use of this data to improve learning  outcomes.

Tool to support assessment strategy and ensure alignment with learning outcomes (a la Biggs) Would be useful to test with some assessments and see how it matches.

Not sure where these sit. Grad outcomes which are done as separate and optional courses with a certificate.
