Moodle Progress Bar Block - 0 views

This could be a useful addition. "The Progress Bar is a time-management tool for students. It visually shows what activities/resources a student is supposed to interact with in a course. It is colour coded so students can quickly see what they have and have not completed/viewed.The teacher selects which pre-existing activities/resources are to be included in the Progress Bar and when they should be completed/viewed."

TED Blog | Flip this lesson! A new way to teach with video from TED-Ed - 0 views

  •
"With this feature, educators can use, tweak, or completely redo any video lesson featured on TED-Ed, or create lessons from scratch based on a TEDTalk or any video from YouTube. How? Just plug the video in and start writing questions, comments, even quizzes - then save the lesson as a private link and share with your students. The site allows you to see who's completed the lessons and track individual progress. It's still in beta, but we're so excited about this feature we had to share."

"As students became more competent with online courses, the completion rates increased to match face-to-face completion rates. This may suggest that online courses require time for familiarisation."

Owning Your Massive Numbers - CogDogBlog - 0 views

Don't just claim massive enrolments, justify the completions. A case study in very poor retention in a Coursera course. The comments suggest that Open is key and that there is no evidence that Massive adds any qualitative value in MOOCS.

Gamifying a Moodle course. What difference does it make? Week 1 | I Teach With Moodle |... - 0 views

Testing a gamified course against a normal course. (I think this isn't really gamification but just reward. I think for it to be gamified there has to be a challenge intrinsic to the activity not just marking activities as complete.)

ADU Online Coffeecourses | Online professional development, recaffeinated - 1 views

  •
"Coffeecourses can be done at your own pace at any time that suits you... Each course is made up of quick (~10 minutes) tasks that can be completed whenever you have time, sitting down with a good cup of coffee..." Nice idea! Application for digital literacy?

"Based upon the results of this study, for the advanced learner there is no significant difference in achievement whether you show the course navigation continually or not, and no significant difference in the amount of time to complete the course."

All About Linguistics - 0 views

  •
Great looking site built by 1st years. "AllAboutLinguistics.com was created by first-year linguistics students at the University of Sheffield, supported by staff in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics. The website formed part of the students assessment, after they completed a course called Introduction to Linguistics, and it aims to share the knowledge they gained from this module with anyone outside the University who is interested in language and its study - especially A-Level students thinking of going on to study linguistics at University. We asked students to build the site because as beginners in linguistics themselves, they were in a good position to help explain the discipline to you."

Not All Online Students Are the Same: A Summary of Stanford's MOOC User Study - moocnew... - 0 views

  •
Different tracks online students take with MOOCs e.g. do the bits which clear up the muddy points in the topic, take the course because the professor is famous, want to find out what MOOCs are like etc. These are the students lumped together as 'drop-outs' and unpacking their experience shows useful learning takes place, but they don't complete the course.

This Company May Hold the Secret to the Future of Education | TIME - 0 views

  •
"It was just 18 months ago that we were living in the "Year of the MOOC." Massive open online courses-MOOC for short-were supposed to revolutionize the way people learned and deliver high-quality education to the masses. But the idea faced a tough 2013. The co-founder of Udacity, an early pioneer in free online education, admitted that his company initially had a "lousy product," while studies showed that hardly any students were actually completing the courses offered by such services at all."
