When Getting Rid of College Lectures Makes Sense - Slashdot - 1 views

  •
"NPR reports that Harvard physicist and professor Eric Mazur has largely gotten rid of the lecture in his classes, after finding that in lecture-based classes, students tend to commit to memory formulae and heuristics, but fail to develop deep understanding of concepts. Mazur has tried - and seemingly succeeded - to cultivate deeper learning with a combination of small group peer-instruction and a tight feedback loop based on in-class polling about particular problems."

A White Boy's Observations of Sexism and the Adria Richards Fiasco | Good Math, Bad Math - 1 views

Excellent post on the blindness of the majority to discrimination on their part - often unintended but still existing because of their position of power.  It's something that we need to be conscious of since we all come from a position of being white, middle class, and majority male. It's not what we do in the office (but still needs to be applied there!) but how we think about the people we support and also how they might design for their classes.

"I use a version of the "garden method" in my classes at Duke, requiring each student to make at least two public contributions to knowledge, where they translate something they learned in the class to some online forum where others can make use of their learning and respond to it."

The American Experience in Vietnam: Notes on the Design and Teaching of a Multi-campus,... - 0 views

  •
"During the fall of 1999,  two colleagues and I taught an unusual class, 'The American Experience in Vietnam.'   Neither the subject nor the approach of team-teaching were new; instead what we developed was a pedagogy using a variety of information technologies to organize one class simultaneously across three campuses and disciplines."

Wikipedia:WikiProject Murder Madness and Mayhem - 0 views

  • The University of British Columbia's class SPAN312 ("Murder, Madness, and Mayhem: Latin American Literature in Translation") contributed to Wikipedia during Spring 2008. Our collective goals were to bring a selection of articles on Latin American literature to featured article status (or as near as possible). By project's end, we had contributed three featured articles and eight good articles. None of these articles was a good article at the outset; two did not even exist.
