Incidence of reported cold/influenza symptoms according to season - 0 views

  •
Incidence of reported cold/influenza symptoms according to season. The 104 subjects in the placebo group (light shade) reported cold and flu symptoms year around with the most symptoms in the winter. While on 800 IU per day (intermediate shade) the 104 test subjects were as likely to get sick in the summer as the winter. Only one of the 104 test subjects had cold/influenza symptoms during the final year of the trial, when they took 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day (dark shading). Key feature of immune system survived in humans, other primates for 60 million years - 0 views

  •
A new study has concluded that one key part of the immune system, the ability of vitamin D to regulate anti-bactericidal proteins, is so important that is has been conserved through almost 60 million years of evolution and is shared only by primates, including humans - but no other known animal species.

Exapation of an ancient Alu short interspersed element provides a highly conserved vita... - 0 views

Conclusion We demonstrated that the VDRE in the CAMP gene originated from the exaptation of an AluSx SINE in the lineage leading to humans, apes, OWMs and NWMs and remained under purifying selection for the last 55-60 million years. We present convincing evidence of an evolutionarily fixed, Alu-mediated divergence in steroid hormone nuclear receptor gene regulation between humans/primates and other mammals. Evolutionary selection to place the primate CAMP gene under regulation of the vitamin D pathway potentiates the innate immune response and may counter the anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin D. Exaptation of an ancient Alu short interspersed element provides a highly conserved vitamin D-mediated innate immune response in humans and primates. Gombart AF, Saito T, Koeffler HP. Vitamin D in the Spotlight; This critical nutrient builds bones, helps fight infection ... - 0 views

  •
For many years, vitamin D was boring--even to doctors. Because it was considered good for bones and not much else, multitaskers like vitamin A, B vitamins and vitamin E hogged all the press. But recent studies have thrust this long-neglected nutrient into the spotlight. Scientists now think vitamin D may affect everything from diabetes to cancer. They're also finding that many people don't have enough of it.

Tähän 8.8.2009 kirjoitettuun juttuun on ilmestynyt mielenkiintoisia kommentteja (lue kaikki!). Viimeisin päivitys 22.8.2009. Ota sinäkin kantaa siihen onko Neonomide -nimimerkillä esiintyvä asiantuntija oikeassa, että saantisuosituksia pitäisi todella reippaasti kohottaa. Kommentteja on tullut tähän blogikirjoitukseen tosi paljon (yli 100 kpl!) ja sähköpostia varsin runsaasti (yli 30 kpl). Tasapuolisuuden kannalta on ollut hyvä, että erityisesti viime päivinä on tullut D-vitamiinin saantisuositusten nostamiseen kielteisemmin suhtautuvia kommentteja.

Vitamin D and Death - Journal Watch Dermatology - 0 views

Vitamin D protects bone, preserves muscle strength, and regulates cell growth and energy metabolism. It also offers some protection against cancer and other disease, but are these effects really important for health and life expectancy? The answer seems to be a resounding yes.

  •
An estimated 50% to 60% of older people have suboptimal vitamin D levels, which is a problem that could affect more than bone health. Recent cross-sectional studies have also shown an association between low vitamin D levels and cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. In a long-term prospective study from Germany, researchers assessed whether 25-hydroxyvitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels were associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among more than 3000 consecutive patients (mean age, 62) referred for coronary angiography.
