The Daily Cafe - 0 views

  •
This site has been created by the 2 Sisters, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. They are responsible for the literacy approaches of The Daily 5 and The Cafe. The site has a wealth of free information, including videos, to help teachers implement the Daily 5 and Cafe techniques in their classroom. The Sisters also have a free e-mail tip of the week that you may sign up for. For even more information, teachers may subscribe to the site. The site does not provide activities for students to complete online, however, the Daily 5 and Cafe are designed to help students practice, review, and apply their knowledge of literacy skills in the classroom through the use of centers, small group work, and one-on-one teacher conferencing.

Laura, Thanks for reminding me about this site. I've been struggling with conferencing in a meaningful way with students, and also with assessment. There are some resources here I haven't seen. Are you doing CAFE?

Scholastic - 0 views

A great website for teachers, students, and parents. Teachers can get lesson plan ideas, additional resources to complement Scholastic News subscriptions, order items and books for the classroom, and print mini-books and other reproducibles. Students can have discussions with others who are reading the same or similar books and learn about new books and authors. Parents can find activities for their child and even learn about how their child's reading develops.

I found a helpful resource on this site to use when teaching my blues unit. The site had video clips of seven films produced by Martin Scorsese that explore blues music and its contributions to American culture and the world.
  •
Here is a valuable website for classroom resources that can also be sorted by grade level. In addition, there are additional links for students and parents as well. The site provides a teacher discussion group and opportunities for professional development.

Jodi, Great suggestion...wonder how much longer this will be around?
  •
I had never checked out this site before. After looking around on it a bit, I am very excited to take advantage of it. I noticed that they have archived a bunch of webinars. There were many that interested me, and I'll be checking them out more later. I also loved that you can ask questions and respond to other teachers. What a great way to get new and fresh ideas!

Very nice resource. So many great aspects to this site.

Light: A Learning Unit - 0 views

  •
This site was created by GE to teach students about the science, technology, math, and history of light. This would work very well in our science unit about heat and light. There are areas that students can read about light, hands on activities, and experiments. For my second graders, many of the readings would need to be done together, but there are also some interactive timelines and animations that students could check out on their own. The hands on activities and experiments would also be fun to bring in to the classroom, and are probably what I would use the most. The only downfall of this site is that the link to the "school lighting challenge" is currently not working. I'd be interested in checking this out if it gets up and running.

nice site to reference from, we cover light in media when we introduce cameras, so its nice to have some visuals as well

What a great resource. I've always seen NOVA programs that would be interesting to share with my students, but I did not know there was a sight where I could search by topic. I also like that they level the clips by appropriateness for grade level. I already plan to use the clip on planets' sizes in relation to each other. Thank you for sharing this. I see myself using it a great deal.

Cooks.com (How to Make Play-Doh) - 2 views

This easy-to-make Play-Doh can be used within a classroom as a way for students to make multiple representations.

I use a similar recipe with my kids. It is very easy and they also love to help make it.
  •
My favorite thing about this recipe is that if the play-doh dries out, you can easily add water and it comes back to life. Talk about a renewable resource!
  •
I made this with my Kindergarten class and they loved it! Thanks for the recipe!!

This is a really cool website for students and/or adult s who are either an ESL student, studying English as a foreign language or who just want to brush up on their English. This website offers everything from games to pronunciation to slang and idioms. This site can also be used in the classroom to help students studying specific components of English such as figurative language. Students can practice what they have learned by taking the quizzes or play a word game. While searching through this website I actually learned a few new things! This website really does have everything!

Blogspot - 1 views

This is a great place to set up a website for classroom or personal use. Many teachers are now moving toward websites on blogspot. You are able to do so many things on these blogs such as: post pictures, play music, follow others, post documents, etc. These blogs are incredible. I usually get lured into one, then another and another most days/nights and before I know it...an hour has passed. Why not set your blog up today?

Moodle - 0 views

Moodle is a wonderful tool for teachers to give students the experience of working in an on-line classroom environment, since they will most likely be taking some classes in that format in the future. Moodle is a great way to get links out to students, have them work through some topics and then have them take a quiz within Moodle. Students really enjoy the imediate results of taking a quiz in Moodle. It takes a bit on the teacher's end to get things set up, but is well worth it when it comes to assessment.

I have been using Moodle for a couple years now and my students love using it!
  •
I have yet to use Moodle, but I know that it is a great way for students to have conversations and comment on assignments. I'm sure that it's a great tool, and I'd love to use it in the future. The one question I have about using it is, what do you do with the students who don't have internet access at home? I didn't know that you could take quizzes in Moodle as well! I wonder how much set up it takes in terms of time on the teacher's end?
  •
I also like the you can imbed videos in moodle. This a great way to show a video clip and then have students discuss the video online.

Our Timelines - 4 views

A great place to teach and learn about not only time lines but also to find out "great people" in history who share the same birthday as you. You can also find out peers, aka people who were born in the same year as you around the same month.

What a fun website! My students could use this for their classroom celebrity week. They already present information about themselves, and they could add to it by sharing historically significant people who share their birthday. What a great way to sneak a history lesson into "fun". Thank you for sharing!
  •
I also like how it tells you how old you were when events happened. Not only will this help students place events, but this will help me when I'm old and can't remember so well.
  •
This is a fun and easy to use activity, especially for younger kids not completely familiar with timelines. And Sarah, I also find the age thing useful- I had a group of fourth graders this morning who didn't have a clue what Jurassic Park was (seriously, are we old?):)
  •
A fun site to use with students! I liked finding out who my famous "peers" are that share my birhtday &/or birth year. The peers that share my birth year are Neve Campbell and Monica Lewinsky, what does that say about me? :)
