This site compiles the best primary resources that are available to help teach different American history events. The documents include: letters, speeches, books and articles from important people from the different eras of American history.

On a note of local interest for all OPS teachers, the Media Technology Center Library and the Joslyn Art Museum have worked together to provide classroom access to these historical, informational traveling exhibits. From Douglas County History to Native American History, call 557-2500 and have the trunks delivered to your classrooms to use for two full weeks. I work in this department one day a week -- and was totally thrilled to be introduced to these marvelous sets of get-your-hands-on primary sources. They can be used in primary grades through high school.

This site seems to be a very good one. It has many images of various happenings in the history of the U.S. It has historical statistics of the United States. There are more research tools available through this site. It is related to Yale University.

The NOAA is the oldest scientific agency in the U.S. The National Weather Service that we know today dates back to 1870. Government documents on this site include meteorological and climate data from all states, maps, and images. The online NOAA Photo Library on this site has over 32,000 images, including hundreds of images of our shores and coastal seas, and thousands of marine species images ranging from the great whales to plankton. This is the homepage to access all of NOAA information and links, but there is an educational outreach link that would lead teachers and students to other valuable webpages sponsored by NOAA.

Well organized and easy to navigate, with a separate kids' site. The teacher section includes excellent lesson plans and self directed professional development modules. Highly recommended for researchers of all ages.

This is a wonderful source when studying our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. It tells about his life and has over 20,000 documents in it.

This site is sponsored by the Library of Congress. The sites focus is the Declaration of Independence and how to use use it with elementary age students. It gives an example lesson plan with it's focus on identifying, examining and evaluating.

This website is good for the Language Arts teacher or classroom. It has many links to primary sources regarding Shakespeare and other English topics. If a teacher were to delve deeply into the meaning or topics of Shakespeare's works, this would be a good place for students to get information.

This site has a large amount of information regarding anything you might want to know about slave history in a variety of locations. There are narratives, court records, newspapers, and much more.

An exhaustive collection of documents, films, books, etc.,organized by century chronicling over 400 years of African American history in America. Highly recommended for middle-secondary history or literature projects.

Thousands of narrative excerpts giving first person accounts of slavery and the individuals it affected. These are accounts of the cruelty and plantation life. There are also hundreds of photos of former slaves.

This site contains narratives of past slaves that were created in the late 1930's. This site, which is a part of the Library of Congress, provides excellent primary sources that respresent a group of people whose voice was often not heard. Teachers and students could use this site when studying the Civil War and slavery, the Civil Rights movement, writing using dialect, to partner with an historical fiction novel that touches on the subject of slavery, and more.

This site was helpful to me as someone who has not been teaching for 10 years and is trying to understand all the terminology and technology involved in searching for information.

This gov doc focuses on the experiences of two families as they settled on the Nebraska prairie between 1886 and 1912. Through primary source letters and photographs it documents the joys and challenges of homesteading in Nebraska.

Kids learn about the Internet, safely traveling through it, and becoming aware of the hazards of its use. Requires an adult's email address but otherwise free. It is brightly animated with games, prizes, videos and play along with the cute characters of Clicky, Nettle, Webster and Router. Developed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. This is great for the library teacher to use for teaching Internet safety.

This interesting site provides photographs, letters, newspaper articles, quotes, and famous speeches all related to the life of Gandhi. While the text is probably best suited to middle and high school students, younger students could use other parts of the site to learn about Gandhi for biography projects or studies of passive resistance.

This site provides information about poets and their poetry that Literature/Language Arts teachers could use in their classrooms. There are links to specific poets, such as Ted Kooser and Walt Whitman, as well as a link to recorded poetry. Students could research poets, they could listen to poetry, or they could read poetry on this site.

This page allows you to search historical newspaper articles throughout history. Students would love this site to research events throughout history by looking at these old newspapers.

This site offers newspaper pages from 1860 to 1992 from various states, including Nebraska. Seeing the front page headlines from a newspaper printed at the time of a historical event could give students a better understanding of how people living at that time viewed the event.

This site is a collection of advertisments from the early 1900s to the late 1950s. The advertisments are sorted by year and the subject. Some of the advertisments you can find on this site is beauty and hygenine, radio, television, transportation, and World War II. Students would love this site because they love to see how things have changed.

This site focuses on primary documents of artchitects and architecture It has blueprints, photographs, and other documents. If you had a student completing research about a famous building or place, this would be a great place to look.

The World Factbook was produced for U.S. policy makers. The information is fairly easy to read and comprehend, therefore, students can use the documents, especially on the middle and secondary level. The World Factbook provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 266 world entities. The government documents they have are maps of the major world regions, Flags of the World, a Physical Map of the World, a Political Map of the World, and a Standard Time Zones of the World map.

This one I am tagging partly for the sake of how entertaining it is. There really are vintage commercials here and you can watch them start to finish. I think these would be applicable in the classroom when talking about how advertising works, etc. or when talking about social culture and how it's changed over time.
