This site includes material about famous Americans. This site would work for any reports about presidents, about authors, or about musicians. It would also be helpful when researching the various states. As an American Literature teacher I would use the site to have students research Langston Hughes, for instance. That would also be a great source for Black History Month.

Looking for another great social studies website? Here it is. This site is sponsored by the Library of Congress and contains amazing stories of America's past. Students will be able to learn more about famous Americans, they can "Jump Back in Time" to read about important events that have taken place in history such as the Revolutionary War, WWII, Western Expansion, Colonial America and many, many more.

This is a cool site. It has newspapers that were actually written during the Civil War era. It has them listed by year. The man who teaches next to me does an awesome job of teaching the Civil War each year. A good project for the kids might be to have them in groups or pairs and each research a particular time line during the war. They may not even believe newspapers existed back then so this site would be a good one to lead them toward to do research. Each paper has pictures and writing.

A deep archive of arts databases sponsored by Harvard. The image database is a great collection of original photos that can be searched by artist name. I searched Picasso and found photos of the artist himself as well as other photos that may not be relevant to research. However, the site is a wealth of information for art students. Great links to the Smithsonian collections.

This site is a trivia game which will also use research skills. If questions aren't answered correctly an address is given to connect with a page from the Smithsonian Institute. The answer can be found somewhere on that page. I think 5th graders would love the challenges presented and glean numerous interesting facts from the information presented.

This website from the Immigration History Research Center and the University of Minnesota has collections of digitized letters written by immigrants and to immigrants. It contains original images of the letters as well as translations, since most letters are in languages other than English. This website allows students a first person perspective of the challenges faced by immigrants to the U.S.

This site focuses on primary documents of artchitects and architecture It has blueprints, photographs, and other documents. If you had a student completing research about a famous building or place, this would be a great place to look.

Just one of the many detailed sites listed in this directory. The entire site has categories in every curricular area. Live links to magazine articles, podcasts, news, etc. This site is an excellent reliable resource for librarians who are working with teachers to design research projects.

This is going to be one database which I will go to over and over again. It has an awesome section titled Teacher Resources which looks like a very interesting place to visit often. It has a section on the 21st Century literacies. It also has a curriculum collaboration section. This will be helpful because many schools are going to a lot of cross curricular activities. It has another section about ethical researching. This is one of the things that I think students have difficulty understanding and especially internet based information. Many students think because it is on the "net" it is true. I found an awesome feature. If a school is using google apps there is support on this site for them if they are having trouble with this application. There is a blog on this site as well. The last section which I thought is really nice is the sticky note cards which are available. Be sure to check out this site; its features are great.

This site has links to information on some of the states. Nebraska is one of the states with a link and there is a wide variety of information included about the state.

While I directed my search to Nebraska once on this site, many of the other state sites that I checked out were really cool. I imagine upper elementary would benefit from this site for projects, but I could utilize this site in my Flat Stanley project. Flat Stanley is sent to my student's families in other states (countries) and we compare and contrast the physical geography, natural resources and climate. This site would allow me to do that while showing the students some specific historical/cultural aspects not experienced through typical research.

This website is for kid's weather research. There is a breath-taking photo gallery along with a video gallery, games and activities, Science Fair project ideas, a picture of the day and cool facts. My 10 year old daughter was simply fascinated at the photographs! This could definitly supplement the second grade weather unit in Lincoln.

The Virtual Jamestown Archive is a digital research, teaching and learning project that explores the legacies of the Jamestown settlement and "the Virginia experiment."

This site provides information about poets and their poetry that Literature/Language Arts teachers could use in their classrooms. There are links to specific poets, such as Ted Kooser and Walt Whitman, as well as a link to recorded poetry. Students could research poets, they could listen to poetry, or they could read poetry on this site.

This page allows you to search historical newspaper articles throughout history. Students would love this site to research events throughout history by looking at these old newspapers.

This site offers newspaper pages from 1860 to 1992 from various states, including Nebraska. Seeing the front page headlines from a newspaper printed at the time of a historical event could give students a better understanding of how people living at that time viewed the event.

I thought this video might be helpful to show students more about using search engines and how to best utilize them to get information. When looking for primary or government docuements, I thought this video could be a starting point for students to start their research. It's very simple explanation for students.

The MedlinePlus website would be very valuable for students in middle and high school grades doing research about diseases and health related topics. MedlinePlus provides health information and documents from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. MedlinePlus is updated daily and has current reliable information on over 800 diseases and conditions. I especially found interesting the video footage of numerous actual surgeries narrated by doctors to treat major medical conditions.

The space exploration info and visuals are fantastic. Space: the sun and planets as well as daily/yearly patterns in the sky are studied second semester at my grade level and this site will be a frequent visit for my students. The research links will be great for the discovery process and increase student motivation, because they can lead their own investigations. Site works well for Geography as well.

The WorldWildlifeFund has long been a reliable and strong force in global efforts to protect some of our worlds most vulnerable animals. Though the site solicits donations, the articles on animals and facts about endangerment are great resources for students doing animal research. Beautiful photos and facts.
