    This is a site that has primary sources that relate to Greek history. My eye was drawn to this because 6th graders study Greek history and I've noticed that students of all ages seem to be very fascinated by it. I think what this website has would be very meaningful if enough was known about the primary sources being shared. In other words, what I saw that is available here isn't engaging all by itself, but if something was being talked about in a history book or in a piece of literature, then it would be cool to make the connection with a primary source here.

    This page has countless primary documents and access to so many teacher resources. Nearly any topic you can think of that relates to American History will have some primary source documents available at this site.

    This University of Washington home page provides access to primary documents, photographs, projects related to the Native American tribes. The initial page allows you to access tribal documents and other collections by country subsections. There is a specific section on Omaha as well as documents on Wounded Knee in the Midwest link. The site accesses many university projects relating to Native Americans, including University of Arizona and University of Oklahoma, all legitimate sites. This would be a great site for social studies students in OPS schools where eighth graders learn about the Trail of Tears and other significant Native American events.

    A deep archive of arts databases sponsored by Harvard. The image database is a great collection of original photos that can be searched by artist name. I searched Picasso and found photos of the artist himself as well as other photos that may not be relevant to research. However, the site is a wealth of information for art students. Great links to the Smithsonian collections.

  • According to Chapman (1997), boys are about eight times more likely than girls to call out answers and not be rebuked by the teacher, creating a classroom dominated by the more aggressive style of males.
  • Girls read more than boys, but they choose narrative fiction to the neglect of other genres. Simpson (1996) argues that boys' nonfiction reading is more "congruent with the acquisition of social power and financial success" since secondary school and the workplace demand the reading of expository and information texts and the writing of reports, procedures, explanations and arguments.
  • Application to curriculum design  Draw from nonfiction genres (e.g., newspapers, web pages and nonfiction texts) for reading aloud and booktalks.  Encourage resistant readings of literature in Literary Club and Socratic Seminar texts.  Find ways to redesign tradition research essays so that students write debate speeches, briefings and persuasive letters.  For example, collaborate with a math teacher to turn a biography report about a mathematician into an investigation in which students research job opportunities in math or science, then write a résumé (e.g., Job Search: Mathematician).  Students benefit from enriched understanding of applied math or science career opportunities while they are reading and writing in workplace genres.

  • Seek opportunities for students to experience, rather than just read, about careers (e.g., Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work).  I sponsored our 6th grade students' participation in Hewlett Packard's e-mail mentoring program in which year-long one-to-one mentor relationships were created through e-mail between students and HP employees, a program that can be replicated using local parents.
