War rations is a concept that is difficult for students to understand. This site uses a painting of people shopping at a grocery store during WWII and makes it interactive. Visitors to the site can examine the picture and click on details to learn more about what is happening in the photo. For instance, it shows pictures and explainations of actual ration booklets, propaganda, posters, grocery prices, etc. There are also nice "Did you know" buttons to learn more and all the primary sources can be downloaded and printed as PDF's.

This site is part of the Eisenhower Presidential Library. It would be extremely useful for civil rights units. This is a nice collection of some of Eisenhower's most important correspondence during the Little Rock High School integration crisis. It is also neat to read them because they are scans of the actual typed documents and not just transcriptions. It seems more authentic when students can see the real thing. His notes, diaries, telegrams, letters and press releases really help to show how Eisenhower handled the situation. (Note: There is even an exchange of letters between Jackie Robinson and the president in which they discuss how blacks need to be patient for civil rights)

This site is organized by subject area and links to many resources. The site includes primary documents and lesson plans in all the content areas. The catagories are organized in abc order and the front page includes the number of items in each catagory.

This is a fabulous site filled with tons of information that could be used when studying history from colonization to the Revolutionary War. There are timelines, maps and documents put into the appropriate category you are looking for during this period of American History. Great site!

The map lover in me is enthralled with this website. The site contains detailed historical maps organized by themes like "Environmental History" and "The Historical Geography of Transportation". Each map then has links to lesson plans organized by K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 with links to additional, applicable primary sources. The site also includes helpful tips for teachers and a useful glossary.

This website offers powerful images touching on current events from around the world. While the text would be challenging for most of my elementary students; I think the images are so telling that they would be a useful tool to teach students how to read pictures and some other powerful visual and media literacy skills.

This site is a small collection within the American Memory Project website created by the Library of Congress. What makes it nice, is that it easily brings together many important documents that help provide insights into the African American experience from the slave trade to the Civil Rights era. Sometimes the larger American Memory site can be hard to navigate. This smaller sub-collection has nicely collected the highlights of the African American collection.

This site is presented by the Virginia Center for Digital History and the University of Virginia Library. It showcases two communities during the Civil War. One count was in the north, and one was in the south. It provides an interesting case study of life on both sides of the war. Students and teachers can use this site to compare maps, letters, diaries, newspaper articles, speeches and records in both communities. It also organizes the war into three eras: the eve of war, the war years, and the aftermath.

This site is full of over 1200 history web sites. There are links to hundreds of K-12 history lesson plans, teacher guides, activities, games, quizzes, and much more.

This site offers a plethora of primary source documents from the Civil War. From photographs to battle maps and diaries to speeches this site is a great resource for teaching students to do the real work of historians with primary sources. Instead of copying answers students can make their own, as McKenzie would say.

This fascinating site is filled with information about spies during the America Revolution. Users can explore the letters of spies (both in their original format and a transcribed version) and their stories and techniques. In addition, the site offers a timeline, more information about people of the revolution, and a teacher's lounge with activities and suggestions for using primary sources with all students.

This Library of Congress site would be fun to use as a bell work activity in upper elementary school. Each day a student could pick one event from "today in history" to share with the class. Informative with pictures!

Today in History is part of the Library of Congress' American Memory project. As the title implies, the site pulls a signicant event in history, reports about it and shows primary sources -- photos and documents -- attached to the event. The writers generally pick one or two topics for the day and elaborate on those. Excellent for upper grades.

Thousands of narrative excerpts giving first person accounts of slavery and the individuals it affected. These are accounts of the cruelty and plantation life. There are also hundreds of photos of former slaves.

This site contains narratives of past slaves that were created in the late 1930's. This site, which is a part of the Library of Congress, provides excellent primary sources that respresent a group of people whose voice was often not heard. Teachers and students could use this site when studying the Civil War and slavery, the Civil Rights movement, writing using dialect, to partner with an historical fiction novel that touches on the subject of slavery, and more.

An incredible number of primary sources can be found on this site regarding our first president. I was impressed with the "Educational Resources" that take some primary sources and scaffold teachers' use of them with students in grades 3-5 and middle/high school.

This interesting site offering many documents regarding World War I. Official papers are included but there are also diaries and memorials of every day people. In addition, the site links to other helpful World War I sites.

This site is a service of the U.S. Government Printing Office has hundreds of U.S governmental documents sorted into the following categories: cornerstone documents, Congressional, presidential, judicial, regulatory, demographic, economic and miscellaneous. This site would be great for social studies students who are studying U.S. history, or those who are comparing our government to other countries.

This website has a list of the "cornerstone documents" from our government. Many of these documents like the Bill of Rights, Constitution, and declaration of independence are the documents our country's laws were founded on. Very easy for students to access the most important documents.

Ideal for grades 4 - 12. Information on the census bureau and its functions. Extensive demographics on each state with accompanying quizzes. A good site for quick statistics on a state. Easy to navigate.

This site is a national history education clearinghouse. It's beautifully designed, well organized and inviting to the user. Divided into three main sections -- teaching materials, history content and best practices. It provides reviews of history websites and collections. One especially cool feature is "Beyond the Textbook," which asks a historical question and looks at how the question is addressed by textbooks vs. historians vs. primary sources.

This interesting site provides photographs, letters, newspaper articles, quotes, and famous speeches all related to the life of Gandhi. While the text is probably best suited to middle and high school students, younger students could use other parts of the site to learn about Gandhi for biography projects or studies of passive resistance.

This page allows you to search historical newspaper articles throughout history. Students would love this site to research events throughout history by looking at these old newspapers.

This site offers newspaper pages from 1860 to 1992 from various states, including Nebraska. Seeing the front page headlines from a newspaper printed at the time of a historical event could give students a better understanding of how people living at that time viewed the event.
