Meet the fake people who will soon crowd your timelines - 0 views

  •
"Welcome to the other side of the uncanny valley of profile photographs. The attention of generated imagery has so far focused on "deepfake videos," in which a real person's face is grafted semi-realistically (for now) onto someone else's body. There's a different impact with deep-learning AI-generated fake still-photo faces that look realistic but aren't attempting to match the appearance of any actual person. And they're so new that these images have yet to get a name-perhaps deepfaces will win out. Deepfaces have a greater potential to add to the noise of troll farms, social-media griefers, and outright scammers and fraudsters because they look legitimate and fail reverse-image searches. As Craig Silverman, a long-time exposer of online frauds and BuzzFeed media editor, says, "I think it presents a big challenge for some of the existing approaches used by investigators, journalists, and police and others to follow a breadcrumb trail.""

Besides the actual tweet text mentioning your keywords, Twitter Archiver also captures other data related to the tweets include: details about Twitter user (e.g. their name, number of follows and followers, location, bio, profile image, verified or not), a link to the original tweet, date and time of the tweet,  the app from which the tweet was shared, number of retweets, and many more. 'The add-on is free though you can upgrade to premium edition to capture more search terms. The premium version also includes supports and polls twitter more frequently (every 10-15 minutes) to download new tweets."

A critical review of Frameworks for Digital Literacy - 0 views

  •
"The first part of this opinion piece finished by reporting there are over one hundred different models and frameworks claiming to describe the nature of digital literacies. Given the messy topography of the field this follow up blog post briefly describes some of the higher profile or more widely known frameworks from the United States, United Kingdom and Europe. The discussion identifies an inherent tension between universal and contextual definitions of digital literacies, and finishes with an example of a current Irish initiative. This local example (for me), and the other major models critically reviewed below, illustrate why we need to challenge some of our taken-for-granted assumptions, and metaphorically 'get off the tracks' in order to develop more transformative frameworks for digital literacies."

Online profile pictures leave lasting impressions, researchers say - Technology & Science - CBC News - 0 views

  •
"There's already a lot of research into how we form impressions of people based on facial features alone. We see a picture of someone and almost immediately make an assessment of that person. As much as we know we shouldn't, we judge books by their covers."

What Happened After I Joined LinkedIn, 11 Years Ago | Donna Serdula | Pulse | LinkedIn - 0 views

  •
"A sinking feeling came over me and I realized that my LinkedIn profile did not portray me as a top notch professional. My LinkedIn profile did not sell my skills or show any differentiation between me and the millions of other LinkedIn users out there. My profile basically said, "This lady doesn't have anything that sets her apart from the crowd.""

Know Thy Students: Providing Aggregate Student Data to Instructors (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu - 0 views

  •
"Rather than providing information about students at risk, we aimed to develop a system that would broadly inform instructors about all their enrolled students, providing summarized institutional data about the aggregate characteristics of the students enrolled in their respective classes. We call it the Student Profile Report (SPR), a short document that summarizes student records, intended to provide a useful snapshot of information about the population of students taking a course prior to the start of a semester. UF Online: What it is and what it isn't - 1 views

  •
"Several weeks ago the University of Florida Online program opened for the Spring 2014 semester, accepting 600 transfer students, and the new program will accept Freshmen starting August 2014. This announcement comes just 2 years after the Florida legislature commissioned a study from the Parthenon Group on how to best leverage online programs in the state, and this program is probably one of the highest profile new online programs in the US within the past few years (along with California's online initiative, Open SUNY, SJSU / Udacity and GaTech / Udacity)."

The 13 Dos and Don'ts Of Job Searching While You're Still Employed - 0 views

  •
"With so many people on LinkedIn, having a complete profile these days won't raise any suspicions, Teach says. "Perhaps the first place a hiring manager will look when they have a job candidate is at the job candidate's LinkedIn profile. It's best to keep it updated all the time so that you don't have to rush to complete it when you start looking for a new job." However, don't indicate that you're looking for new job opportunities on your profile, in case your current employer monitors your page."

Watch: Jaw-Dropping Software Makes 3-D Models From Any Photo - 0 views

  •
The video demo is genuinely jaw-dropping stuff. It takes us through a series of photographs, showing how with just a few clicks of the mouse, 3-Sweep can turn the objects inside them into resizable, turnaroundable 3-D models. The first two clicks establish the object's profile; the third traces its main axis, with the software snapping intelligently to the object along the way, like a more sophisticated version of Photoshop's magic lasso.

The Social Media Strategy Primer - 1 views

  •
"The starting line. Square one. The basics. First step. When it comes to planning an effective social media presence, most minds drift to the tool box. Should we be on Facebook? What about Twitter? Do we need a profile on LinkedIn? What about video? These are all great questions. But, they can't be answered effectively until you've gone through the process of figuring out what social media can do for you. You could skip the primer and just dive in, learn from your mistakes and successes. But your presence on social media will be more profitable in a shorter period of time if you just begin at the beginning."

University Pages: LinkedIn Launches New College Profiles - 0 views

  •
The professional connections site LinkedIn is launching a new section of its social network Monday: University Pages targets younger users who want to connect with colleges. More than 200 schools now have profile pages, according to LinkedIn. As part of the new effort, the company also dropped its minimum age to 14 in the U.S. The new college profiles allow prospective students to see how many of a school's graduates are on LinkedIn, as well as a breakdown of the main fields in which they work. The pages also list the top employers of alumni.

Keep Your Facebook Friends From Finding Out You Use Tinder - 0 views

  •
When you use your Facebook login to sign into a third party mobile app, that app gets to connect with your profile. Using Graph Search, someone can see which apps you've authorized. Sure, this isn't a big deal for things like Yelp or SocialCam or Twitter, but do you really want everyone being able to see that you use Tinder for the occasional casual encounter?

Hey Job Applicants, Time to Stop the Social-Media Sabotage - 3 views

  •
Many companies now search candidates' social-media accounts to get a better feel for their personalities, to see if they have creative flair, and to find out how well they communicate. Done right, your profile can work in your favor. Of 2,184 hiring managers recently surveyed by CareerBuilder, one-fifth said a candidate's online profile helped them land a position. More often, though, it backfires: 43 percent said they found information that led them not to hire a candidate, up 9 percentage points from last year. That trend means either that more job applicants are behaving badly online or that human resources is getting stricter in sniffing out problems.
  •
I think this article raises a point that we should absolutely acknowledge. Although I don't believe I am "behaving badly" online, what if some of my viewpoints do not entirely mesh with a future employer. Are they less likely to hire me because I have critical opinions about certain policies, etc.? I think it is this issue in particular that makes people reticent to fully participate. However, this is our new reality. How to balance it?
