This article discusses the great impact that self-concepts have on students' grades and performance, mainly in English and mathematics. These authors found different results than have previously been found in tests; they found that "there were significant positive paths from math self-concepts to subsequent math outcomes but not to subsequent English outcomes." Also, they found that girls had higher English and math grades but lower math self-concepts then boys, these results differ from previous test which claimed that the gender difference was diminishing. These results were interesting due to their difference in regards to other tests conducted.

Forster discusses how teaching with a graphics calculator can help a student understand the concepts of certain graphs, and how graphs are formed. One graph specifically mentioned is the scatter plot graph, and how it is applied to functions. She also discusses how after learning these concepts on a graphics calculator, students were able to graph by hand easier without the help of the instructor. A study was conducted and explained within the classroom setting. This article while limited in the size of study shows how the use of graphics calculators can help students in the understanding of certain math concepts.

In this article the authors examine different self-concepts of 3000 students in England between the ages of 13 and 14 years. The subjects tested were English, science, and mathematics. The results were found to be similar to other test that had been done before. An interesting finding was that boys had significantly higher self-concept scores than girls, except for in English.

The idea of media literacy prompts an increasingly divisive debate between educators who wish to protect children from the commercialization of global markets and those who challenge critical media studies as misguided, outdated, and ineffective. We have provided a historical overview of changing conceptions of media literacy as preparation and protection in market society, arguing that contemporary concerns about children's fast food marketing and sedentary lifestyles call for new approaches to the education of citizen-consumers in a risk society. Our case study demonstrates that a media education programme can provide scaffolding for children's critical thinking about their sedentary lifestyles and media consumption. These 5 things help jump start literacy in a early childhood classrom.

This is an article from ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review. The authors of the article emphasis the importance of simulation in designing and virtually testing components of computer architecture. They also suggest that simulators can be used as teaching tools for exposing tough to grasp concepts in both the hardware and machine level language that are otherwise impossible to understand. I find this article insightful because it suggests that utilization of such simulators at the architecture level will lead to much more efficient hardware by use of metrics used in virtual performance tests. However, design of accurate enough simulators have proven to be an arduous task, which is addressed by the article.

This article discusses the use of slang by different ethnicities. It discusses the concepts of whether or not slang can be pinpointed to certain cultures opposed to a certain group of "slang talkers". It also helps distinguish between slang being used as a barrier between teens, adults, social groups, and even differences between friends. This helps to illustrate the different varieties of literacy among youths and adults from different cultures.

The author discusses the relation between the college atmosphere and how it affects college females eating behaviors. This includes components such as peer pressure as well as nutrition. This concept relates to eating pathology found among female students on college campuses. Linder Danielle interviews college females in order to determine what aspects lead to such situations and what nutritional habits they take part in such as dietary pills and caloric intake restriction.

An increasingly complex and challenging financial world is facing our nation's youth. Elizabeth Johnson takes a look at the disadvantages that our lower income youth have in regards to financial knowledge and access to learning. Though there has been a rising awareness of the importance of financial literacy among the youth, there needs to be an equal interest in our disadvantaged youth and the access that they are given to improve their financial literacy. The paper addresses building financial capability through learning by doing. It also shares several innovative ideas such as having youth-ran school banking programs. In addition it talks about the successes of Junior Achievement programs addressing economic concepts.
