As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison. (Nelson Mandela)
The great secret, Eliza, is not having bad manners or good manners or any other particular sort of manners, but having the same manner for all human souls: in short, behaving as if there are no third-class carriages, and one soul is as good as another. (G.B. Shaw)
If someone is able to show me that what I think or do is not right, I will happily change, for I seek the truth, by which no one was ever truly harmed. It is the person who continues in his self-deception and ignorance who is harmed. (Marcus Aurelius)
In my teaching, I must always remember that each student has the capacity to be my mentor. In truth, I am most successful as a teacher when I see those I teach as mentors already... For those I teach become as I see them. (from Arbinger's "The Choice in Teaching and Education")
Always run after opportunities to create peace between people, to find ways to bridge differences, please... Close the space between you and someone today. Seeing their essential goodness helps a lot. (Yehuda Berg)
I've been at the Arbinger Conference in Utah the past two days. What an incredible experience. So much to share - they have really done a great job at re-writing the material. It is sharper, simpler and more impactful. I believe the new way of presenting the material will make a big difference in the impact we have. By the way, I met Chip Huth - the KC police SWAT Team sergeant we've seen in countless videos. More to come - stay tuned.
Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind. Anger will disappear just as soon as thoughts of resentment are forgotten. (John Dryden)
Until we have met the monsters in ourselves, we keep trying to slay them in the outer world, and we find that we cannot. For all darkness in the world stems from darkness in the heart. And it is there that we must do our work... The world changes when we change. (Marianne Williamson)
My own experience and development deepen every day my conviction that our moral progress may be measured by the degree in which we sympathize with individual suffering and individual joy. (George Eliot)
The statement is deliberately designed to be a bit confusing - it is a paradox.
It is essentially saying the you< as a person< only get to know yourself (become an "I") through your encounters with another. Without your encounters with other people you don't truly become who you were meant to be.
Thomas Merton said it this way - "No Man is an Island". He also wrote a book about it.
Might I be in the wrong? ...Just to ask the question seriously, even without answering it, is already to undergo a change of attitude. (C. Terry Warner, Bonds That Make Us Free, p. 197)
Any change, any loss, does not make us victims. Others can shake you, surprise you, disappoint you, but they can't prevent you from acting, from taking the situation you're presented with and moving on. No matter where you are in life, no matter what your situation, you can always do something. You always have a choice and the choice can be power. (Blaine Lee)
