For me, it is very vague statement linguistically, it leaves a lot of room for many different interpretations. I'd like to get the right meaning. Sorry, my English is not perfect.
The statement is deliberately designed to be a bit confusing - it is a paradox.
It is essentially saying the you< as a person< only get to know yourself (become an "I") through your encounters with another. Without your encounters with other people you don't truly become who you were meant to be.
Thomas Merton said it this way - "No Man is an Island". He also wrote a book about it.
