CBSA reports declines in September brass mills shipments - 0 views

  •
The US-based Copper and Brass Servicenter Association, a trade group representing primarily North American brass mills, reported that shipments of brass mills products amounted to 19.68Mlb (8,927t) in September, a decline of 14.9% from August and an annual decline of 8.1%. Shipments of copper sheet fell by 21.7% m-o-m or 961,000lb to 3.45Mlb (436t to 1,565t) and copper rod declined by 14.4% m-o-m or 807,000lb to 4.77Mlb (366t to 2,164t). Shipments of brass sheet and alloy tube also registered declines in September compared to the previous month, 6.9% m-o-m and 37.4% m-o-m respectively. The survey reported that half of participants expected orders to fall in the coming quarter compared to the previous quarter. When asked about lead times, half of the suppliers surveyed reported that their lead times had shortened in September compared to the previous three months.

USA - 5-year anti-dumping duty review on German brass sheet and strip shipments conclud... - 0 views

  •
The US Department of Commerce concluded that a revocation of the antidumping duty order on brass sheet and strip from Germany would likely lead to a recurrence or continuation of dumping. This follows a 5-year review that was initiated on 1st March 2011. An essential aspect of the results was the calculation of the weighted-average percentage margins for German exporters, which it measured to be 3.81% for Wieland-Werke AG and 7.30% for all others.

Nanowire lawns make for sheets of image sensors - 0 views

  •
Growing a mixed "lawn" of two kinds of nanowires can make a new kind of light-sensing array that could be made in metre-scale sheets. The researchers behind the prototype say such cheap, high-quality image sensors would allow uses not conceivable using today's more expensive technology. Current sensors, such as those found in digital cameras, are made like any other silicon chip - they are carved out from a block of material. The new nanowire sensors are instead built from the bottom up, using chemically-grown nano-sized components. A research team led by Ali Javey, at the University of California, Berkeley, developed the process. They start by growing an unruly "lawn" of nanowires on a surface. The crop is then printed onto another surface, a step that simultaneously tidies them up. "At the first stage, the nanowires are more-or-less standing up, like a bad hair day. But during the printing process, they effectively get combed," says Javey. The nanowires, which are a few tenths of a millimetre long and a few tens of nanometres wide, can be printed onto anything from silicon to plastic or paper. Whatever the surface, it must be prepared with a pattern that guides the nanowires to predetermined locations. To make the functioning sensor, two different "crops" of nanotubes are printed onto the same surface. Cadmium selenide nanowires produce electric charge when hit by light, while those made from silicon-coated germanium act as transistors to amplify that charge.

CBSA sees copper and brass shipments down 8.6% m-o-m in November - 0 views

  •
According to data from the Copper and Brass Servicenter (CBSA), shipments from US brass and copper mills fell 8.6% m-o-m in November, to 20.5Mlb (9,300t). The organisation said that total shipments in the first 11 months of the year were broadly unchanged from 2011, at 244.8Mlb (111,000t). A breakdown of the figures reveals that copper sheet and copper wirerod saw the smallest declines in the month, -5.2% m-o-m and -5.3% m-o-m respectively, whilst brass sheet was the worst performing sector recording an output drop of 11.7% m-o-m. In a survey released with the data, 83% of respondents said they expected orders to increase in the coming 3 months.

Flat-rolled production slows during Chinese New Year - 0 views

  •
A recent survey by the Shanghai Metals Market of 21 major Chinese copper plate, sheet, strip and foil producers, with a total capacity of 966,200t/y, showed that operating rates in February fell to 42%, as factories shut for the Chinese New Year holiday. Copper flat-rolled producers closed facilities as migrant workers returned to their homes and did not come back to work until after the lantern festival in late February. Survey participants were reporting better levels of demand post holiday as end-users such as the automotive industry and the lithium ion battery industry increased production. Survey participants expect utilisation to increase to around 60% in March.
