China - Furukawa Electric to produce copper wire in-house to strengthen export competit... - 0 views

  •
In late August, Furukawa Electric announced they would be raising prices for enamelled wire as they try to offset the rising cost of energy and varnish, particularly for polyvinal formal enamelled copper wire (PVF). According to Furukawa varnish and energy costs have increased 40% and 80% respectively since fiscal 2004. Sumitomo Electric, Hitachi Cable, Unimac and Totoku Electric have all also announced that they are either negotiating price rises on future shipments or conducting studies into a price increase. However, slowing demand for electric wire and electronic parts may make any further price hikes difficult. An industry source commented that, "makers could only get a higher price for PVF."

Jiangxi Copper has said that it will start-up a new 400,000t/y wirerod and wire plant in H2 2012, after missing its scheduled commissioning month of May due to the onset of the rainy season. The plant, which is based in Zengcheng city, Guangdong province, will be fed by refined copper produced by the company's smelting/refining operations resulting in less Jiangxi Copper cathode available to the domestic market. After startup, the company's semi-finished copper products capacity would double to almost 900,000t/y. Whereas Platt's figures indicate that Jiangxi's cathode production is expected to rise by a smaller value of around 150,000t to reach 1.09Mt in 2012.

Southwire, the US-based aluminium and copper cablemaker, has said that while the use of copper in most electrical applications is unlikely to change, some manufacturers are likely to move toward the use of aluminium wire. The auto industry is increasingly using aluminium wire for traditional copper applications. This is occurring most predominantly outside of the US, however domestic autos companies have also been using aluminium wire for battery cable and aluminium wire harnesses for lights. Southwire stated that for most electrical applications copper usage will remain dominant because of its overall reliability.

What's Next for Airplane Wiring: Carbon Nanotubes - 1 views

  •
"Present-day power distribution cables are heavy large gauge wires with limited flexibility. Designers could remove these cables and replace them with either a lighter substitute (to achieve the same amount of current) or gain the ability to push more current through the system. The additional flexibility could also mean the cables could be routed in ways not possible with copper conductor wires."

Wire and Cable: Materials, Technologies and Global Markets Report - 0 views

  • Much of the volatility in the cable market is tied to the raw material costs on the supply side. As a result, the pricing trends of cables and wires are not entirely driven by market demand. The market is also far from being homogenous, with the end user profiles ranging from wholesale purchasers, telecom operators, retail users, utility managers, power supply companies as well as enterprises. The leverage enjoyed by the buyers is by and large directly proportional to their off take and inversely proportional to the criticality of cables and wires to their operations. While the technology behind cables has remained consistent, it has not stayed static. As with most applied sciences, cables have witnessed a relentless stakeholder drive towards achieving better transmission with lesser resources. This has led to improvement and improvisations in the core conductor as well as its assembly technologies.

Automotive market maintains a steady pace - 0 views

  • The electronic content, and thus the interconnect content, has been increasing in light vehicles, and this trend will continue through this forecast period.
  • Aluminum wire increasingly is used in passenger car wire harnesses. To reduce weight and improve gas mileage, the automotive companies are turning to aluminum wire, among other solutions. Aluminum wire always has the potential issue of galvanic corrosion between the wire and the beryllium-copper or phos-bronze contacts. Companies like TE Connectivity and Delphi have come up with solutions that alleviate this concern.
