Encore Wire Corp (WIRE) Q1 2019 Earnings Call Transcript - 1 views

Bill Baldwin -- Baldwin Anthony -- Analyst When we see the price of aluminum in relation the price of copper become more favorable for aluminum, does that show up in your demand for aluminum fairly quickly or not at all or over a period of time? Daniel Jones -- Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Well that's been debated over time. We prefer Encore Wire consistently and will continually prefer to ship and sell copper. That's just the way it is. The aluminum piece of that that you're referring to is a substitution depending on the relationship between the cost of each. Normally if aluminum is more expensive so is copper and vice versa. When copper gets to a certain dollar amount, there's no question that in the conversation the substitution question comes up. There are other costs involved with that most of the time. It's not a new scenario, but it doesn't necessarily increase the demand for aluminum beyond what the increase in the demand of copper would be. But it does enter into the conversation in the quote stage pretty early on when copper gets really expensive about what would it take to substitute aluminum for this piece of copper. And so in that, it's definitely in the conversation.

Utilisation rates at Chinese electrical wire producers seen down in December - 1 views

  •
A survey by the Shanghai Metals Market of 20 major Chinese electric wire and cable producers, with total capacity of 978,000t/y, showed that the average operating rate fell to 76.59% in December, down 2.8 percentage points from November. The survey cited the falling temperatures in Northern China as dampening the demand for electrical wire for use in new infrastructure. The survey also reported that raw materials inventories at Chinese electrical wire producers had increased by 4.24 percentage points from November to 25.12% of production, stating that the fall in copper prices in December had tempted producers to increase stocks.

Chinese wire and cable producers restock before Chinese New Year - 0 views

  •
A recent survey by the Shanghai Metals Market of 21 major Chinese electrical wire and cable producers, with a total capacity of 990,000t/y, showed that operating rates in January decreased to 69.73%, down 6.86 percentage points from December. The survey cited a lull in major contracts for power cables prior to Chinese New Year as the reason for sluggish demand. However, stabilisation in the demand for enamelled wire was noted in January, whilst demand for electrical wire was estimated to have picked up. The SMM survey revealed that producer's inventories of raw materials had picked up prior to the Chinese New Year Holiday, with producer's raw materials holdings as a percentage of production up 9.46 percentage points since December, to 34.58%. The survey suggested easier cash flows and expectations of future copper price rises were reasons for the increase.

  •
The Japanese Electric Wire & Cable Maker's Association has announced that electric wire shipments in fiscal 2011 increased by 0.3% in total from the previous year to 685,020 tons. The year-on-year increase in shipment levels for a second consecutive year was despite the impact of the earthquake. Although those for electricity and electric machinery fell below the previous year's level, those for construction/building and automobiles recovered to increase the total figures and those for communication increased by 6.1% year-on-year to 15,728 tons. The figures for electric wire shipments for electricity declined by 13.2% year-on-year to 61,247 tons and fell significantly below the previous year's figures as electric power companies decreased capital investments in the aftermath of the earthquake. On a monthly basis, they also declined in almost all months.
