However, standard round copper cables can be bulky and consume precious space. A recent innovation in manufacturing technology by 3M has resulted in the development of a uniquely shielded, thin, ribbon-style copper cable. The cable has the ability to fold multiple times and maintain signal integrity, allowing for higher-density racks and space savings. A major barrier to decreasing the size and stiffness of a round cable is inherent in the construction of traditional cable. This is an issue because a round copper cable can extend up to nine inches when routed behind a cabinet. In conventional, twin axial constructions, the shield is applied by wrapping it spirally around the insulated wire pair. This layer is then overwrapped to provide support and retain the primary shield wrap, increasing the stiffness of the pair. Multiple pairs are then cabled and an overall foil and braided shield are typically applied, thus further increasing the cable bulk and stiffness.

    The world's metals producers are still looking to China as the panacea for all ills with the often expressed hope that the country's need to support the domestic metals smelting, refining and steel industries will be the saviour of this sector and supply sufficient demand to support prices in the West. Consequently Chinese data are followed intensely and the latest information suggests that copper, iron ore and steel demand are holding up well - indeed increasing substantially - while aluminium is flat and zinc and lead suffering. But Chinese data requires interpretation and can be misleading as pointed out by Macquarie's Bonnie Liu in her latest China Commodities Weekly research note, and she concludes that there has to be some doubt that the latest extremely strong figures can be maintained.     According to data released by the Shanghai-based nonferrous metals data provider Metalease, 18 major copper tube makers in China were operating at 35% capacity in January, in response to plummeting demand. Business activity has also been affected by the Chinese New Year festivities. The plants, which have a combined capacity of 978,000 t per year, consumed 28,000 t of refined copper in January compared to their consumption capacity of 81,500 t per month. Even though the Chinese government has increased the export tax rebate for copper tubes of diameter of less than 25 mm, the 18 copper tube producers exported only 21% of their total output in January, compared with 26% in December.

Micro Persuasion: How to Data Mine Google Reader Feeds for Trends - 0 views

  • Google Reader - my favorite RSS application - recently added a powerful search functionality that has made me infinitely better at studying people and their social patterns. Using Google Reader you can now search an individual feed, tag or a folder and get back a total item count, all sorted by date for as long as you have been a subscriber to that feed. In my case, some of my feeds go back to October 2005 when the Reader first launched. That's a ton of data to mine for trends. Now that my reader shows a huge cache of posts, I am subscribing to tons more feeds, stuffing them into a folder solely for the purpose of data mining them. The site also has limited set of advanced search operators. One hopes they will add more. It's worth noting that I don't actually read these high volume feeds. Rather, I mark them all as read so they get logged in my feed database and can be searched for insights.

  • Joe Kava, the company’s head of data centre operations, has warned that water is “the big elephant in the room” for tech companies, which can typically use hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a day. “We’ve been focusing on power consumption and energy efficiency and that’s excellent,” he said in 2009. “I think the next thing we need to turn our attention to is what do we do about the looming water crisis?” As water becomes more scarce, data companies’ use of it could attract public scrutiny, he added, possibly resulting in regulations governing how much water they consume.
