China - Rural power grids to be upgraded - 0 views

    According to sources from the State Grid Corporation of China, meetings have been held to start a new round of projects to upgrade rural power grids. In July 2010, a former head of National Energy Administration said that the budget for the new round of projects would be over RMB200B. Two thirds of the total budget would be used for the purchase of transformers, electric wire, power cable, towers, poles, and associated products. The national grid area will cover 26 provinces and will serve 667 million people in rural areas (about 80% of the rural population).

This technology seems to me to be much more beneficial on a local scale, what if every home had its own battery, then home power generation becomes economically more viable for everyone. If you could show that a system like this could pay for itself in say 5 years then every home would want one. Plus for this to be implemented on a large scale requires massive investment that could be decades away. Share the technology and lets get it in homes by next year. Great ted talk. We can invent and invent all we want, but the fast solution to allowing renewable energies to take centre stage is to reduce the base energy draw.   • The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2012 reveals that the sector produced a record 128 million tonnes of fish for human food - an average of 18.4 kg per person - providing more than 4.3 billion people with about 15 percent of their animal protein intake. Fisheries and aquaculture are also a source of income for 55 million people."Fisheries and aquaculture play a vital role in the global, national and rural economy," said FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva. "The livelihoods of 12 percent of the world's population depend directly or indirectly on them. Fisheries and aquaculture give an important contribution to food security and nutrition. They are the primary source of protein for 17 percent of the world's population and nearly a quarter in low-income food-deficit countries."Árni M. Mathiesen, head of FAO's Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, said: "Fisheries and aquaculture are making a vital contribution to global food security and economic growth. However, the sector faces an array of problems, including poor governance, weak fisheries management regimes, conflicts over the use of natural resources, the persistent use of poor fishery and aquaculture practices. And it is further undermined by a failure to incorporate the priorities and rights of small-scale fishing communities and the injustices relating to gender discrimination and child labour."Boosting governanceFAO is urging governments to make every effort to ensure sustainable fisheries around the world. The report notes that many of the marine fish stocks monitored by FAO remain under great pressure.

The project, named Distributed Generation with Environmental Sanitation Project, will allow the elimination of organic matter resulting from the hog creation, which will stop being released over rivers and deposits such as Itaipu's. Such residue will be transformed, via biodigesters, in biogas, a fuel used in the generation of electric energy.

It is the world's largest consumer of energy(1), and with over half of China's 1.3 billion population choosing to live in its sprawling and gridlocked super-cities, the demand for power has never been greater. But ensuring that the 680 million who live in China's megalopolises receive a steady stream of electricity is no easy task. However, while the solution - to install a network of long distance super-grids - has proved to be effective, it has come at great cost. This highly innovative smart grid infrastructure that the State Grid Corporation of China, has been specially designed to transmit ultra-high-voltage-direct-current (UHVDC) at over 600,000 volts to China's main population centres from rural areas rich in energy(2). America, India, Germany and Brazil are also incorporating UHDVC lines into their grids, but Britain, whose population is expected to grow from 64,875,165 (2015) to 77,568,588 by 2050(3), is only in the early stages of exploring the potential of the technology according to the Energy Networks Association. And while the UK's Utility giants may yet decide to invest billions of pounds in these high-tech super grids, a fully functioning next-generation Battery Electric Vehicle to Grid (V2G) charging system, located in Birmingham, the UK's second city, may mean they never need to. But how could this potentially game-changing technology, which has been installed at Aston University's European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI), one day save the National Grid and the tax-payer billions of pounds?"

  • Promoted by key projects including large-scale long-distance power transmission, ultra-high voltage grid construction, power grid construction in new rural areas and railway electrification reconstruction, the power transmission and distribution and control equipment industry of China achieved rapid development in 2009, with the annual sales revenue and total profit of RMB 656.19 billion and RMB 49.13 billion, a YoY rise of 15.7% and 19.5% respectively. Boosted by the fast growth of power transmission & distribution and control equipment industry, five sub-sectors mounted up vigorously in 2009. In particular, capacitor and corollary equipment sub-sectors showed the most rapid growth, with the prime operating revenue and total profit increasing by 28.3% and 63.3% respectively from a year earlier. This can be ascribed to the following three factors: firstly, China has made much progress in the development of ultra-high voltage and extra-high voltage technologies; secondly, it is the period from 2009 to 2010 that the ultra-high voltage demonstration projects in China have been constructed in succession, characterizing huge investment; thirdly, China has actively promoted the concept of energy conservation and emission reduction and paid increasing attention to voltage quality, safety and electricity saving, etc.
