La Farga Tub France, a new subsidiary of La Farga Group, the Spanish copper semis fabricator, commissioned a new distribution facility to supply France with the Group's 'La Farga Tub' copper products. The copper piping will be manufactured at the Les Masies de Voltregà plant and will be 100% recyclable and bacteria-free. The products' intended application areas include: Sanitation, refrigeration, climatization, medical and industrial use. La Farga estimates that the annual consumption of copper piping in France is 30,000t.

Sul filo di lana, nel corso dell'ultima discussione in merito al decreto Milleproroghe, il senatore del Pdl Salvo Fleres ha presentato un proprio emendamento che prevedeva lo stop incondizionato al rilascio di nuove licenze per le parafarmacie e il contingentamento di quelle già aperte ad un parametro d'abitanti (una ogni 20mila abitanti) tale da determinare la chiusura della maggioranza degli esercizi aperti con il decreto Bersani. (poposta che non ha trovato seguito per la presentazione da parte del Governo di un maxiemendamento).

SDI-La Farga's joint venture wirerod project, which will have the capacity to produce 82,000t/y of copper wirerod once made fully operational after its scheduled Q2 2012 start-up, will use No. 2 Birch Cliff scrap as its primary feedstock. No. 2 Birch Cliff is a mix of wire and tubing with 96% copper content. This scrap material is popular amongst China copper consumers, fuelling speculation that the new US operation will lead to a narrowing of US scrap discounts and questioning whether it can compete in a market with a lower cathode-scrap margin.

Doe Run Peru, the country's fourth largest metals exporter, said on Tuesday it will halt all operations at its sprawling La Oroya smelter on Wednesday because financial and environmental setbacks have prevented it from buying concentrates. The plant, hobbled by financial woes since March, processes lead, zinc and copper. Its work permits could be canceled if it does not meet an October deadline for an environmental cleanup.

An official from SDI La Farga LLC's said on 11th December that the company is producing limited amounts of wirerod at its new US $39M plant in New Haven, Indiana. The new facility, a joint venture between Spain's La Farga Group and Steel Dynamics Inc, produces wirerod from number 2 scrap copper rather than cathode. The company official said "we've produced quality rod and are in the process of getting approval of customers and we have done so with several customers." He added that plant officials are "waiting for more customer orders to start producing more".

Anhui Jincheng, the Shanghai-listed producer of copper PSSF, said on 26th March that it produced 93,872t of copper PSSF in 2012, a 13% y-o-y increase from 2011. Despite the increase in output, the company made a net loss of RMB57M in 2012 from a profit of RMB24M in 2011 (loss of US$9M from a profit of US$3.8M). Remarking on the results the company said that "uncertainties in the global economy, the euro debt crisis, plus the weak Chinese economy, has negatively impacted demand by the downstream processing sector last year."

Talking at the annual CESCO/CRU World Copper Conference, CRU Principal Consultant Vivienne Lloyd said that up to 2Mt of copper demand could be lost over the next five years due to substitution and consolidation amongst Chinese semis producers. Lloyd said that the areas under the greatest threat from substitution are the automotive wiring harness sector and the HVAC sector. However, CRU believes that the aluminium/copper price ratio is likely to have peaked in 2012 at around 4:1, and will fall back gradually to 2017 reaching 3:1, which should relieve some of the substitution pressures.

EDF Energies Nouvelles has signed an agreement with Clipper Windpower for the supply of 67.5 MW of wind turbines. Clipper Turbine Works, a subsidiary of Clipper Windpower, will supply 27 wind turbines, each with a 2.5 MW capacity, to build the first phase of the La Ventosa wind farm in Mexico.

Rea Magnet Wire has announced that it will lay off the 75 staff employed at its Las Cruces plant located in the West Mesa Industrial Park and suspend production. This is expected to take place by February 2009, however, it depends on the work commitments of the plant. The company produces copper, aluminium and brass insulated magnet wire and bare wire, supplying motor, transformer and coil manufacturers. Rea's workforce in North America exceeds 1,000 staff. The decision to close the plant is attributed to weakening demand for magnet wire in the US. As a result of poor market conditions, the company cannot continue to operate at limited capacity. Rea Magnet reported that the decision is not permanent and it hopes to reopen the plant as long as the market circumstances permit so.

Until November it was virtually impossible for a private developer of renewable energy power plants to become an independent power producer (IPP) in Mexico. Article 27 of the Mexican Constitution precluded private investment stating that electricity generation for public use is an activity to be undertaken exclusively by the Government. Mexico's enactment of a new law for the use of Renewable Energy and the Financing of the Energy Transition ( Ley para el Aprovechamiento de Energías Renovables y el Financiamiento de la Transición Energética ) substantially improves the legal framework for private investment in renewable energy projects. The law regulates renewable energy electricity generation for purposes other than providing public electricity services. The law states that the use of renewable energy for electricity generation is possible for private use and any excess energy can be sold, but only based on regulations and approvals by Mexico's energy regulatory body, CRE .
