The book "Open Educational Resources in Brazil: State-of-the-Art, Challenges and Prospects for Development and Innovation"(author - Andreia Inamorato dos Santos)  has been out of print. This is the second IITE publication within the series of case studies summarizing best practices of OER development in non-English-speaking countries. The study contains an overview of the Brazilian educational landscape, national educational policy and the strategies of ICT use in education. The author describes existing open digital content repositories with due emphasis on the copyright situation and considers several examples of successful international OER projects which involved Brazilian partners. The book is destined for those who study OER initiatives and projects on a national scale as well as promotion of OER movement worldwide.

Christchurch's earthquake-displaced secondary schools overcame a disruptive year to achieve better academic results than in 2010. Thousands of pupils at a number of the city's schools spent most of last year sharing sites after earthquake damage forced them from their schools. There had been fears pupils' academic results would be tarnished by the upheaval of having less teaching time each day and travelling to another school site, often across town. However, statistics released by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority show the displaced schools accomplished even better National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) results last year than they did in 2010.

SHENYANG, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Educational authorities across the nation are embracing newly amended rules to prevent cheating on upcoming college entrance exams.

Last week, 450 charter schools in the Valencia region of Spain threatened to close their doors, leaving 250,000 pupils on the streets. The reason: they can no longer pay their bills for basic, essential services such as electricity and water because they have not received any funding from the local authority for the last six months.

Since Romania and Bulgaria's accession to the EU, more and more Roma have flocked to Germany, many of whom send their children to school without any knowledge of the language, the Berliner Umschau states. The teachers at the Hermann Schulz primary school in Berlin-Reinickendorf have sent a letter to the authorities to complain about the matter. In one of the classes at the school, 20% of the children are Roma with no knowledge of German. The teachers have complained that they are no longer capable of catering to the needs of the entire classes and are finding it impossible to teach the curriculum.

The author has spend the last six years identifying and visiting high performing schools with significant populations of children living in poverty and children of color. What she has found is that although teachers in these schools work hard, they find their work invigorating because they are successful. And they are successful because their schools are organized with care to ensure that they do everything right, from discipline to curriculum.

The programmes aim to create greater awareness of safer school construction in new schools, while at the same time making sure that the existing school buildings are safe. It is based on good practices from Indonesia, the most seismic prone country in the world. It is intended to be used by other countries facing similar challenges as well as other organizations working on building the capacities of local authorities to effectively implement safe and child friendly school buildings."

SHANGHAI - The city's first sex education textbook for primary school students will be used in 18 schools in Shanghai in the coming semester. The textbook, Boys and Girls, which the authors prefer to describe as gender education rather than sex education, was written by the Primary School Affiliated to the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, and will be piloted in 18 primary schools in Yangpu district.

"Reflection" is a vital component of service-learning. This manual was designed for educators and leaders of service groups who have an interest and a commitment to provide reflection opportunities for students and community partners alike. College professors, K-12 teachers, community organization leaders, and leaders of service organizations have all found, "Facilitating Reflection: A Manual for Leaders and Educators," a useful supplement to their work. This manual was written during the summer of 1995. The primary author, Julie Reed, was interning at the Georgetown University Volunteer and Public Service Center at the time. I had asked her to pull together a compendium of reflection activities that would be useful for educators and leaders of service groups. None of the ideas represented in this manual are original. We borrowed examples from a variety of sources, which you will find in the "Acknowledgements" section at the end of the manual.
