Bookshare™ is a web-based digital library that gives people with print disabilities the same ease of access to books and periodicals enjoyed by those without disabilities. In the United States alone, there are more than 10 million people who have a disability that prevents them from reading a traditional printed book. Bookshare allows a book to be scanned once and then shared in digital formats that are easy to download, search and navigate.

Format bigotry or What exactly is a book? - 0 views

  • Reading is more relevant and critical than ever.  Paper and books aren't going anywhere. However, if we want robust programs, increasing readership and to become the hub of learning and skill-building for our schools, we had better diversify and start offering our students greater choice.

Upcoming digital magazine storefront faces myriad challenges - 4 views

  • Upcoming digital magazine storefront faces myriad challenges Some major players in the publishing world have partnered to develop an online storefront for magazines and newspapers. The idea is to offer a standardized advertising format while preserving each publication's look and feel, but details are somewhat lacking for the time being.
  • This brings up a major challenge that publishers will have to face as this project progresses: the lack of a distinct product genre that would be ideal for reading magazines in digital format.

"Reading is a foundational skill for 21st-century learners. Guiding learners to become engaged and effective users of ideas and information and to appreciate literature requires that they develop as strategic readers who can comprehend, analyze, and evaluate text in both print and digital formats. Learners must also have opportunities to read for enjoyment as well as for information. School library media specialists are in a critical and unique position to partner with other educators to elevate the reading development of our nation's youth."

'Collected' Online Magazine - SLANZA - 38 views

Cathy, thanks for bookmarking this. The SLANZ journal is great reading and the issuu format is very cool. The articles on 'Content Curation' are all interesting to me, esp Judy Connell's. I'm not sure that content curation is the new black, rather a rebranding of what librarians and TLs have traditionally done. A paper based 'pathfinder' may seem anachronistic but they still have a place as tool to conmunicate / market/ educate. Of course, I also support Judy's position on the opportunity to for Web 2.0., apps and a range of digitals tools to curate content to communicate / market/ educate our students in developing 21st century skills. I'm not sure that 'content curation' the new black but it most definitely has synergy!
