With all these direct applications for learning, it's easy to justify using mobile devices in school. But what real and lasting effect will they have on the "formal" learning equation?

"As is he habit once every month, I feature here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning a list of some new educational iPad apps that I came across in different blogs and websites. Of course I can not include every single app I bookmarked because the list will be too long, however, the suggestions I have below are the ones that stood out to me from the rest. Podríamos definir el Mobile learning como una nueva forma de educación creada a partir de la conjunción entre el e-learning y la utilización de los smart devices/ dispositivos móviles inteligentes (pda`s, smartphones, Ipods, pocket PCs, teléfonos móviles 3G, consolas, …), y que se fundamenta en la posibilidad que nos ofrecen estos nuevos dispositivos, de combinar la movilidad geográfica con la virtual, lo cual permite el aprender dentro de un contexto, en el momento en que se necesita y explorando y solicitando la información precisa que se necesita saber. Nos encontramos cada día más inmersos en una sociedad basada en la información y el conocimiento. Un conocimiento que se deriva de la interpretación y la contextualización de dicha información, a la que accedemos gracias a un uso más fácil e intensivo de las nuevas Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC) de las que actualmente disponemos. A medida que ha ido en aumento el número de usuarios se ha pasado de un concepto eminentemente instrumental, basado en su vertiente tecnológica, tanto en dispositivos como en las diferentes modalidades de acceso, a una interpretación cada vez más centrada en el usuario y en los servicios que éste consume y genera. Se trata de la llamada sociedad de la información, consolidada definitivamente con la globalización derivada del fenómeno Internet.

AR can be used to bring still pictures to life, point the camera on a mobile device at a still image and it will trigger a video. By following a few steps described here (with examples) you can create your own learning materials.   Alternatively AR can be triggered by location. Point your device at a pre-detemined location to retrieve a video or information you have prepared for learning.

Mobilary is a project of the Chicago Public Schools Department of Libraries & Information Services. Its purpose is to provide recommendation for the implementation of mobile technologies in our district's school library programs to successfully impact teaching and learning. Through the collective experiences of our librarians combined with action research and data collection, we will develop a body of best practices and knowledge related to these technologies.

It also has user guides, pod casts and a user agreement. Another great aspect of this site is that it highlights tips and tricks for use in the classroom.

January 5, 2015 Google Maps is an excellent tool to use with students to develop their spatial thinking. Beyond getting driving or walking directions to the other, this tool enables students to discover the world right from their classrooms. It is also a very good way to teach students about geography concepts, distance measurement, map readings and other fundamentals of mapping such as longitude, latitude, locations and many more.
