"Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out fills this gap, reporting on an ambitious three-year ethnographic investigation into how young people are living and learning with new media in varied settings-at home, in after school programs, and in online spaces. By focusing on media practices in the everyday contexts of family and peer interaction, the book views the relationship of youth and new media not simply in terms of technology trends but situated within the broader structural conditions of childhood and the negotiations with adults that frame the experience of youth in the United States. Integrating twenty-three different case studies-which include Harry Potter podcasting, video-game playing, music-sharing, and online romantic breakups-in a unique collaborative authorship style, Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out is distinctive for its combination of in-depth description of specific group dynamics with conceptual analysis."

Over four themed episodes that criss-cross the globe, journalist and academic Dr Aleks Krotoski explores the meaning of a phenomenon that is transforming everything from how we learn to how we shop, vote and make friends. The series reveals astonishing facts about how the web is rewiring our society, our economy and - drawing on a unique experiment conducted specifically for the series - maybe even our brains.The series brings together everyone who's anyone on the web - from its inventor Tim Berners-Lee to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg; from Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales to Amazon's Jeff Bezos; from web pioneers like Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to digital media barons like Arianna Huffington and Twitter founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams.

This presentation was delivered by Steve Wheeler, Associate Professor of learning technology at the University of Plymouth, during his keynote address at the eAssessment Scotland Conference.  Well worth a watch!

Michael Stephens sums up the switch to digital resources beautifully.  "I may have a bit of a bias, but I would much rather my students make the short trip to their desks and computers instead of commuting across town or farther. This publication and its wider project draw upon several years of ESCalate activity focusing upon the development of learning and teaching in relation to the use of technology. Practitioner-focused workshops, held over the past 3 years, have proved successful in the dissemination of innovative use of emergent technologies and pedagogies in education subjects. Increasingly the presenters and audiences for these events were drawn from wider subject and curriculum areas. This particular project builds upon 2 years of workshops and seeks to collect and disseminate innovative activity in Education subject areas.
