Traveling Without Seeing - 21 views

I definitely agree that technology is an important and useful part of our lives today and I see nothing wrong with snapping some pictures or updating your Facebook, but I think there is extreme value in taking a break from that and really experiencing something, especially if you're traveling to a new place. In my opinion, looking back on the best experiences I've had and trips I've been on, I remember things I did rather than a great picture I took of something. There is also the issue of instant gratification when it comes to photos and constantly being connected with your friends from home, for example. One great reason to go travel is to get away from your everyday life, and I believe that that includes taking a break from technology.
"My Daughter's Homework is Killing Me" - 53 views

I agree that we are put under an enormous amount of stress and I think this is especially relatable to a community like ours, where there is constantly an underlying competition between students and therefore competition to be "the best" and to get into the highest ranking universities. I think that a comparison between other generations' and our work load, however I don't know if the author is the most credible source for that.

The Redwood Bark has a lot of cool videos on their website. I really like the diving team one and I think it would be cool if we could do something similar with our sports teams here at Tam. What do you guys think of their videos?

Not only is this a very relevant topic right now, but it's also very well done. What do you like or dislike about the video? Would video profiles work for us?
Rapes in the Military finally being heard - 6 views

We've spent a lot of time discussing rape-culture in class, so I think this issue fits in well with what we've talked about. This same idea that rape is simply apart of the military is completely false. What should the gov't do to help change this?

Do you think this will change things at school/Will this work? Are there any possible problems that might come up because of this?
Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World - 26 views

It is hard to believe that people do things like this. Not only is she taking advantage of someone who is disabled and using it to her advantage, she is also taking advantage of the rules that Disney puts in place for handicapped people and exploiting them. She feels entitled to do whatever she wants because she can afford to do so and doesn't see a problem with anything that she's doing.
Photo Essay: "The People You Meet at McDonald's" - 24 views

I think that photo essays would interest a lot of Tam students because they are "easy" to look at and can be understood quickly without having to read something. It would also be great to put them up on the website. I think it would be interesting to do photo essays on the different "groups" at Tam, like the AIM students, the photo students, the Drama students. You could capture their process of creating their final product and even the teachers and students involved.
Cartoons - 13 views

I think cartoons can be a great medium, especially for a more controversial idea. However, they are difficult to do correctly because, like Billie said, they have have good artwork and a strong punchline, but they also must be able to reach a big enough audience. If they are too obscure, they aren't effective either because no one will understand.
If someone can make a good cartoon, we should definitely use it in our magazine, but it is hard to do.

I think that tightening security is a good thing. Although I understand that it might be frustrating to Tam students and other people who want to attend the race but not participate, in the end it will be better for everyone because of the risk of another bombing. They will most likely apply more security to other events like this for public safety.
Racially Segregated Prom, Georgia - 52 views

When I first red this article, I found it hard to believe. Up until this year, this school in rural georgia had racially segregated proms. It's hard to imagine that something like this could still exist.

Rape Culture at Paly High - 46 views

I think the point the girl made on the kqed show was a really important one; our problem is that we focus on teaching girls not to get raped instead of teaching boys not to rape. Although a girl puts herself more at risk if she is drunk, she should still not ever be blamed for what another person does to her. Also it's so wrong for people to blame Amy for her raper in the park, simply due to the fact that she was drunk. If she was passed out drunk and a guy who is no where near as drunk as her rapes her, how could that ever be her fault?

I think that the Bark's article had more relavant details, and you get the most important information at the beginning due to the fact that they waited to publish the article. However, we did not print anything that was false, they just had more details in their article. I think it was appropriate to write it early rather than making sure everything was perfect because this was a huge issue that many high school students were concerned with or at least aware of and it was important to get the information that we knew out there.

The Bark is still doing some cool video projects and I think it would be great to experiment with something like this. It's an easy way to get a profile done and it seems as though it would be more accessible for people. What are your thoughts on video projects especially in comparison to print articles?
