Perceptions Regarding School-Based Occupational Therapy for Children With Emotional Dis... - 0 views

  •
This study is of particular interest to me after completing my fieldwork in a school system. I had the chance to work with many students who presented with emotional disturbances. I never worked with students based solely on goals associated with these emotional disturbances, but observed and attempted to proved treatment for their emotional disturbances after first working toward their school based goals. Typically these disturbances presented themselves as depression, aggression, and irritability. It was heartbreaking to look around the school and see how many students were affected by some form of emotional disturbances. Unfortunately as a school OT I was only to focus on goals that would make the student more functional in school (such as handwriting) and never had the ability to write goals base on a student's emotions. I believe that there is a great need for occupational therapists to focus on writing goals to provide interventions to students with emotional disturbances. In my setting there were not enough OT's/COTA's to work with all of the students who had emotional disturbances because there were so many students who first required school based interventions. This study suggests that more evidence-based research is needed to help school therapists work with children with emotional disturbances. I hope that eventually there will be a place for OT's in this area.

Professionalism in Education: Teacher Etiquette Tips for the Modern Professional - 0 views

Since I am currently working in a school setting, I decided to look up professionalism in schools. This article mentions teachers but since OT's work in schools as well I think this is a great article to read for OT's. It discusses many current day topics such as etiquette when communication through email, social media communication, as well as avoiding cliques.

Supervision of OT's over COTA's - 0 views

  •
In working in a school system with many COTA's, I am learning the responsibilities OT's have in supervising COTA's. I found these frequently asked questions about the responsibilities of OT's and COTA's in a school system and I think its something worth looking at if working in a school system. Unfortunately, these are through the state of Nevada board of OT. I tried looking up information on Ohio's responsibilities but could only find a PowerPoint, which I could not bookmark for Diigo. If interested further in OT and COTA's responsibilities, look into comparing the state of Nevada and Ohio's regulations.

Creating Makerspaces in Schools | Edutopia - 0 views

  •
I did not know what Makerspaces were until my CI told me about them. Many teachers at my school have created their own versions of these to promote a positive working environment to allow creativity to flow. In schools, Makerspaces typically consist of various supplies for school work like pens, pencils, markers, glue, tape, scissors, etc.

Clinical Reasoning in School Based OT - 0 views

The scope of this handout created by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is a guide for school based therapist when determining if a child is in need of services in the school. This document states that if the child cannot have access to their education or will not experience educational benefit then occupational therapy services are relevant and could be necessary in order to enhance the child's educational success. Alternatively, this handout also addresses when occupational therapy services are not warranted. Some indicators to know when services are not needed include 1) the needs can be addressed by a special educator or school faculty 2) can needs be addressed during non school hours and/or 3) will providing services lead to an unnecessary gaps or contraindications with other necessary services. These simple guidelines can help the therapist to clinically reason if the student requires services and why or why not. Another great piece of this handout is discussing when occupational therapy services can be discontinued. This section helps the therapist walk through the necessary step in order to accurately determine if services are still needed.

Losing our grip: More students entering school without fine motor skills - 1 views

  •
Many students are entering school today with a lack of strength and skill in their fine motor capabilities. This article really showcases this experience from the perspective of the teachers and occupational therapists in schools. According to Linda Cunningham, an occupational therapist in Denver Schools, our students are not gaining enough strength and fine motor skills because of our busy day to day lives. Children learn by exploration and figuring things out on their own and in our ever busier world, they are encouraged more and more to be involved in organized activities and are missing out on time to play and explore on their own. This is definitely an interesting article promoting play for children outside of organized activities.
