Systematic Review of the Effects of Exercise on Activities of Daily Living in People Wi... - 0 views

  •
This is a systematic review that looks at the evidence for the effects of exercise on ADL functioning of people with AD. This review also looked at the effects of exercise on cognition and mood and on physical performance. The initial search for articles for the systematic review began with over 2000 articles, and the reviewers narrowed it down to 6 articles. Overall, they found that exercise can, in fact improve ADL function in people with AD. Exercise can also improve physical performance, and may slow the decline in cognition and boost mood in those with AD.

This article used 6 other articles to review effects of exercise on ADL performance of those with Alzheimer's Disease. Occupational therapy intervention that includes aerobic and strengthening exercises may help improve independence in ADLs and improve physical performance in people with Alzheimer's. More research needs to done to identify specific components of intervention and optimal dosage to develop clinical guidelines. At my SNF placement, I have worked with many residents with Alzheimer's. We do use strength training with most patients is they are able to do it, and we also work to increase endurance as well. It is good to see evidence to back up treatment

This link is to a tool designed to assist FW educators in understanding the scoring aspect of the FWPE by providing behavioral expectations of the OT student. The information is organized by performance area. Evaluations and Screening, and Intervention are the two performance areas addressed in this link. Specific items for each performance area are then defined by the 1-4 point rating scale with behavioral examples as guidance. This tool is also a great guide for students in self-assessment of clinical reasoning skills. As we know, self-reflection is a key element of professional growth. This is a tool I plan to use occasionally during my FW to ensure competence in clinical reasoning.

This source talks about clinical reasoning of OT students who are completing their fieldwork rotations. The author discusses behavioral objectives for 2 out of the 7 performance areas: Evaluation and Screening and Intervention. I believe this is a good resource for students on fieldwork.

The purpose of this document is to provide occupational therapy fieldwork educators with a description of behavioral expectations of students at each level on the one to four point rating scale of the FWPE

Comparison of self-reported and performance-based measures of functional ability in eld... - 1 views

  •
In the ED and some acute care settings therapy services are based off of self-report measures in interviews with physicians. Correlation analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between the self-reported and performance-based measures of functional ability. Patients reported higher functional ability than observed by using the performance-based measures. This indicates that the two methods provide different information about functional ability. Previous research demonstrates a discrepancy between self-report measures and functional measures of functional tasks ADLs, functional mobility and IADLs. It is suggested both measures are utilized to appropriate a plan of care

Occupational Performance Needs of Young Veterans | American Journal of Occupational The... - 0 views

This study examined occupational performance issues amongst soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The researches focused on ways to motivate these individuals to participate in their daily occupations. Getting back to civilian life after serving in the military and experiencing war is the most challenging and most common mental health and brain injury. Thirty 20-29 year olds were interviewed using the COPM. These individuals were also screened for PTSD, depression, TBI, and alcohol abuse. The top five challenges of occupational performance from using the COMP were relationships, school physical health, sleeping and driving. The role of occupational therapy is vital for their individuals to reintegrate them into the communities and to the daily occupations.

Occupational therapy plays a crucial role in maximizing client's functional performance, regardless of their disease or condition. Sometimes, it is necessary to adapt the environment or modify the way that clients perform a particular task. In addition, exercise and physical activity has been shown to slow disease progression and enhance overall functional performance.

Guidelines for Supervision, Roles, and Responsibilities During the Delivery of Occupati... - 0 views

  •
This document provides a definition for supervision: viewed as a cooperative process in which two or more people participate in a joint effort to establish, maintain and or elevate the level of competence and performance. The authors add that supervision is based on a mutual understanding between the supervisor and supervisee about each other's competence, experience, education and credentials. For me, it was interesting that the authors indicated that supervision is supposed to promote growth, encourage creativity and innovation. Thus, if your relationship with your supervisor does not reflect this then you may want to meet and discuss this document.

This article discusses the general supervision guidelines for OTs and OTAs. It is broken down into four sections which cover general supervision, supervision of OTs and OTAs, roles and responsibilities, and supervision of OT aides. Supervision is defined at a joint effort to establish, maintain, or elevate competence and performance. The article urges OTs to seek mentorship as supervision to maintain competency and increase knowledge. Delegation of tasks to OTAs by OTs should be done with regard to the complexity of the client's needs/the intervention technique, the practice setting, and state/agency requirements.
