Advocacy in occupational therapy: Exploring clinicians' reasons and experiences of advo... - 0 views

Professionalism: As we have learned, it is our duty to do our best to advocate for OT, but also our clients. This qualitative study aims to understand the meaning of advocacy of OTs by exploring their reasons for advocating. Results show OTs advocate for a few reasons: for themselves (personal fulfillment), the client (engaging in occupation, human rights and basic needs, quality of life), and a mixture of both (client-centered practice, power and influence to benefit client).

Client-Centered Advocacy: Every Occupational Therapy Practitioner's Responsibility to U... - 0 views

This article discusses the ethics behind OTs taking on an advocacy role, both as an advocate for their clients and also empowering clients to advocate for themselves. The OT code of ethics requires OTs to be advocates through the principles of beneficence, justice, and veracity. It is important that OTs understand laws and regulations and how to apply them to clients needs. Understanding this legal language is important as it can dictate who and how we treat. The incorporation of evidence based practice is also essential in advocacy efforts as it adds to credibility and can help strengthen a case for a client and their need for services.

In her Slagle Lecture, Dr. Yerxa discussed the changes that were occurring in the occupational therapy profession during the 60's to become a more professional and respected profession. Dr. Yerxa begins by breaking down the steps the profession has taken to become more professional such as: performing more organized, objectified, and accepted research; implementing workshops, seminars, and study courses outside of the annual conferences; the focus on client-centered treatment; the increased responsibility to contribute to health care fields pool of knowledge and communicate with other professionals. From these changes that occurred, occupational therapy became a more respected and recommended health care profession. This document is important because the aspects discussed throughout the article are important for us to implement into our professional careers to not only advocate for ourselves but for the occupational therapy profession as a whole.

Tears in My Eyes 'Cause Somebody Finally Understood": Client Perceptions of Practitione... - 0 views

  •
This study identified practitioner qualities and traits that clients with brain injury see as important. Three themes regarding practitioner qualities emerged from the data: (a) roles of the provider, (b) perceived helpfulness of services, and (c) personal characteristics of the providers. Beneficial provider roles included advocate, friend, mentor, and team member. Perceptions of helpfulness of the services included relevance, meaningfulness, practical application, skill development potential, and whether periodic feedback on progress was provided. Personal characteristics of the provider valued by the participants were clear and honest communicator, supportive, respectful, good listener, and understanding.

The Ethics of Care vs. Ethics of Competition - 0 views

  •
I found this blog posting by Charlotte Kruse to be very interesting. Although she is speaking about ethics in educating students, I feel that her thoughts are comparable to what we will focus on as a clinician. Kruse discussed how ethics of competition not only pushes students to be the best they can be but it also allows students to learn the importance of team work because if they don't add essential information needed to the team then they will not be looked at as an asset. Similar to us as clinicians, we are pushed by our professors, clinical instructors, and hopefully one day students to be the best we can be and we have to effectively work with the various individuals in the healthcare profession to provide our patients with the best care possible. When working with the other professionals we have to provide essential information regarding the client in order to be an asset for the plan of care as well as advocate for the patient.
