By embracing 'new tech,' Manor school district is finding success - 0 views

  •
"Five years after New Tech High School opened, graduation rates there have topped 97 percent. That's enough to convince Manor school district leaders that the project-based learning program should be expanded districtwide. Administrators at the 7,600-student Manor district on Travis County's northeastern edge - where two of its 11 traditional schools received the state's lowest rating this year - see the program as transformative."

Backwards EdTech Flow Chart | Talk Tech With Me - 0 views

"I truly believe technology enhances the classroom, but I never think it should be used just for the sake of using it. This is another visual I created to help teachers select the right technology tool for the job. I hope it helps you think backwards (or rather the "right" way) to think about selecting a technology tool to use in your class. It starts by asking what you want students to do, and then you pick a goal, such as explain a concept. Follow the diagram until you either reach a list of tech tools to help you or your students complete this task or you reach a prompting question, such as "do you need them to do this verbally?" Based on your yes or no answer, you'll finally come to a list of edtech tools."

Why Mish-Mash is Better Than 1:1 | The Spicy Learning Blog - 0 views

  •
"In my whole teaching career, I've only had a mish mash of tech. Currently, we don't have a class set of anything, but we do have small sets of different tools. Nevertheless, at any given time, it's possible to be 1:1 on the internet in our room. I prefer teaching with the limitations of no class sets, because it means we're constantly reflecting on the merits of each tool for the given purpose"

"Among the curriculum innovations Williamson examines are High Tech High, a charter school network in San Diego that integrates technical and academic education; Opening Minds, a "competence-based" curriculum used in 200 British secondary schools; and Quest to Learn, a "high school for digital kids" in New York City (with a sister school in Chicago). He also describes two major partnerships: the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, which advocates for "21st century readiness" for American students; and the Whole Education Alliance in Britain, a network of "third sector" educational organizations."

Team Teaching Helps Students, Disabled and Not - SchoolBook - 0 views

  •
"As the principal of P-TECH I am focused on bringing all my students to reach their potential, including those with learning disabilities. It may seem like the 9-14 school model would exclude high-needs students but actually there are several techniques I am employing that could be used in other schools as well. Increased learning time and a school culture that expects all students to complete the associate in applied science degree are key contributors to our success."

From Digital Doubter to Tech Guru | ED.gov Blog - 0 views

  • By the end of the year, Magiera had developed systems to push the rigor in her classroom, engage students in their own learning and develop their self-efficacy, creation and collaboration
  • Magiera says that what turned her teaching around was not just the presence of the iPads in her classroom, but the professional learning she participated in that helped her to leverage them.
  •
""Just bells and whistles." That's how elementary math teacher Jennie Magiera described her feelings about the limited value of educational technology three years ago. Today Magiera serves as Digital Learning Coordinator for the Academy for Urban School Leadership's network of 25 Chicago Public Schools (CPS). As she trains others to use technology effectively, it is hard to imagine a time when she was so dismissive about technology in the classroom."

"Despite their tough zip codes and challenging students, the schools have turned in strong results--outperforming nearly all of their impoverished California peers and even many of the state's more privileged school districts on standardized tests--using "blended learning," a combination of traditional teaching and computer-based instruction that has led many school reformers to herald Rocketship as the technology-driven future of education."

The 7 Golden Rules of Using Technology in Schools | MindShift - 0 views

"Sometimes teachers and administrators need a kick in the pants to see what they perceive as problems re-framed in a different way. Adam S. Bellow, author of The Tech Commandments, and founder of eduTecher, spoke to a roomful of receptive teachers at the recent ISTE 2011 conference, and demonstrated some of the ironies and contradictions the education system is mired in. And he had some advice."
