SWIFT is a national center focused on providing academic and behavioral support for all students, including those with the most extensive needs. This Brief highlights federal policies for family engagement; describes examples of policy actions by the state of Massachusetts; and illustrates local policies and practices at the Dr. William W. Henderson Inclusion Elementary School in Dorchester, MA, a SWIFT knowledge development site. To guide SWIFT Center technical assistance on the Family and Community Engagement Domain in participating states and districts, we suggest four ways to weave family engagement policies and practices into the SWIFT framework.

Perspective of a student with a disability

"Engage switch users with Video. Choose a video from YouTube and using the web apps below convert the video into a switch accessible educational activity. Almost all videos can be made switch accessible, however some videos will only play on their YouTube Channel. If one does not play try another - there are many to choose from! In the web app the videos will play for a short time, then pause, after the switch is pressed the video will continue to play. "

Many students struggle to read well enough to support learning in various areas of the curriculum. Drawing on an eight-month inquiry, with 28 grade five students, this article discusses text-to-speech technology as an inclusive reading practice that allows students entry into their literacy communities, access to a variety of texts, and enhanced meaning making.
