Hazel Sarah Musfelt Hazel Sarah (Perreten) Musfelt, 96, formerly of Rushville, passed away March 29, 2012 at the heritage Nursing Home in Bridgeport. She was a resident of Sheridan County most of her life and also resided in Cherry County for twenty years. The eldest of eight children, Hazel was born December 30, 1915 to the parents of William and Lulu Perreten at the home of her grandmother Sarah Spittler in Hay Springs. She was baptized February 14, 1927 at Clinton with the Rev A.E. Richardson. While at home, Hazel worked in the fields alongside her father and spoke very admirably of him. Growing up she rode her horse four miles to District 14 School and also back and forth to town to take music lessons from Mrs. Roland Fairhead, tying her horse to the hitching post, east of where the bank offices used to be, now the Chamberlain Garage. Later she drove the horse and buggy to pick up the neighbor children and the teacher. In high school her father got her a Model T Ford to go to school during the winter months and recalls she would have to drain the radiator so it wouldn't freeze then got into the boiler room in the school to heat up water before heading back home. After graduating from Rushville High School in 1935, Hazel cooked for the Sandoz Ranches. She married Edward Musfelt, a ranch hand from the Sand Hills. Their union was blessed with one child, daughter Bonnie Mae. They worked at different ranches before Edward went to work at the Dept of Defense at Sidney, Harvard, Alliance and Crawford. They leased the Hanchett Ranch for 16 years in Cherry County on share basis (half calf crop.) She worked side by side with her husband putting up hay; mowing, sweeping, raking and also fixing fences. Mike Whitby, who is on Thursday's ballot paper for the directly-elected post, was held by police at his home in north Wales on Monday. Detectives arrived at the house at 7.30am but the candidate refused to co-operate and officer were unable to detain him until around six hours later, the Press Association reported. Merseyside Police said he remains in custody being questioned over alleged electoral fraud by making false statements and faking signatures on nomination election papers. Detective Superintendent Martin Andrew, of Merseyside Police, said: "Following an allegation that nomination forms for the mayoral elections had been fraudulently filled in, a police investigation was launched. "Officers conducted extensive inquiries in the Wavertree area of Liverpool over the weekend and interviewed a significant number of people. "Following those inquiries and after taking advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, Merseyside police officers attended an address in the Wrexham area of North Wales at 7.30am today to speak to the homeowner about the allegations. "My officers made repeated attempts to speak to the occupant and, at around 1.30pm today, they arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of making false statements and faking signatures on nomination election papers - an offence under Section 65A of the Representation of the People Act. "The man was taken to a police station in Wrexham where he was interviewed about the allegations. "He currently remains in police custody." CONSULTING GROUP OF SPRINGHILL SOUTH KOREA - A plan to alter the subjects of the lowest level South Korean Public Service exam in favour of high school graduates has been met with opposition. The Ministry of Public Administration and Security has announced that it intends making the currently compulsory college level subjects optional while adding high school subjects as electives. The announcement came after President Lee Myung-bak said the percentage of high school graduates in the Public Service should be increased. A ministry spokesperson said that beginning in 2013, English and Korean history would be compulsory test subjects, while test-takers could select two more subjects either at university or high school level. "The plan aims to expand the opportunities for high school graduates to enter the public service sector," the spokesperson said. Those preparing to take the test have spoken out against the plan in a Government web forum. "The time and money I spent for the past three years on studying will go to waste," one said. "We will have tax officers who don't know accounting and prosecutors who have no idea about criminal law." Others have spoken out in support of the plan however, saying the high unemployment rate of graduates from provincial colleges and universities was a serious problem that needed to be addressed. Supporters said recruitment for the lowest level Public Service jobs was originally aimed at high school graduates. "Young individuals who have the basic requirements can be promoted to higher positions as they learn from experience," one said. "The current method may lead to unfavourable consequences such as hiring incompetent Public Servants. CONSULTING GROUP OF SPRINGHILL SOUTH KOREA - SEOUL - South Korean financial regulators said Thursday they had uncovered the country's biggest insurance fraud, involving more than 1,300 people and three hospitals. The scam was carried out by 1,361 people including 31 insurance workers, the Financial Supervisory Service said. Residents of the southern province of Gyeongsang posed as fake patients or exaggerated their illnesses to claim a total of 9.51 billion won ($10.36 million) from insurance firms, it said, adding 893 women were involved. Last November, police uncovered a similar insurance fraud involving more than 400 people in Taebaek, a mining town in the eastern province of Gangwon.

International Paper is investing $44 million to modernize its Bogalusa site, according to state and wire reports. IP Bogalusa Mill Manager Todd Crutcher said the investment will help retain more than 400 jobs at the facility and save more than four times that number in related jobs in the community. IP completed a $4.5 billion acquisition of Temple-Inland Inc. in February and became the fifth owner of the Bogalusa mill in its 106-year history. The Bogalusa jobs average more than $69,000 a year, plus benefits. "International Paper is the largest private employer in Washington Parish and one of the top five economic drivers on the Northshore," Gov. Bobby Jindal said in a release. "Yet this community has been concerned for many years about the facility's future. That's why our state's Business Expansion and Retention Group began regular visits with Temple-Inland staff in early 2009 and continued to work with International Paper after it acquired Temple Inland's assets through a merger. The bottom line is that we made it a top priority to retain this facility and protect the thousands of jobs in this community. Thailand is seeking help from China and South Korea to support its efforts to crack down on the smuggling of pseudoephedrine-based cold pills. The move came after the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) obtained information that a Thai company had struck a deal to buy 10 billion pseudoephedrine-based cold tablets from a Chinese firm. Previously, the DSI obtained information that the firm also signed a deal to buy 850 million tablets, or 40 tonnes of the medicine, from South Korea. The DSI found that 87 million cold tablets were transported into Thailand from South Korea by plane on nine occasions since 2010. They had false air cargo manifests to avoid attracting attention from the authorities. The DSI suspected the medicines were smuggled in from South Korea. The DSI is investigating two companies suspected of being involved in the smuggling of the pills from overseas. The companies are UTAC Thai Co Ltd, a supplier of integrated circuits, and TVR Group Co Ltd, a car dealer and vehicle hire firm. Some information relating to the drug purchases was uncovered at the companies during recent searches of their premises but the firms denied any involvement. Mr Tarit said yesterday DSI officials also discovered a contract to buy 10 billion pseudoephedrine-based cold tablets from China during the search at UTAC Thai Co Ltd.
