"THE WORLD LISTENING PROJECT (WLP) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies and cultures through the practices of listening and field recording. The WLP was founded in 2008 and is supported by the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology, a membership organization and regional chapter of the American Society for Acoustic Ecology, affiliated with the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology. "Open Space 2014" is an exhibition introducing works of media art and other forms of artistic expression born out of today's media environments, to a broad audience. Literally a beginner's guide to media art, the exhibition features leading works from the realm of media art, artworks incorporating cutting-edge technologies, works with a critical standpoint, and in addition, projects that are currently in progress at various research institutions. All of them are being displayed along with explanatory notes designed to help the visitor gain a better understanding, according to our aim to present media art in a fun and easily accessible way. Also on the schedule during the exhibition period are a number of related programs including talk sessions, lectures, symposia and workshops with artists and experts, as well as guided tours around the exhibits with explanations by the curatorial staff. A space that combines ICC's diverse functions, Open Space integrates galleries, a mini theater, and the video archive "HIVE." Since its launch in 2006, the exhibition has been held as an admission-free event with changing contents each year. Based on the mission of ICC, it aims to function as an open platform where possibilities of communication culture and art created with the help of advanced technologies can be presented to a large number of people.

"The exercises presented in this book have been developed by the author as part of his listening workshops and artistic research on acoustics and the body. Exploring issues concerning: contact, filter, and distance, each of the exercises evokes a situation where the body is used wholly as a medium for experiencing sounds in relation to one's present self. The exercises guide listeners to encounter sounds distributed in space in relation to their sources considering shifts in frequency, amplitude, and rhythm."

THE SCHOOL OF SOUND began in 1998 as a single, four-day event aimed at exploring the creative use of sound in the arts and media, with a special emphasis on film and screen productions. It was responding to the limited opportunities to study sound, particularly for film. Our first event attracted over 200 people from 25 countries. The programme featured Walter Murch, Michel Chion, Piers Plowright, Mike Figgis, Laura Mulvey, Peter Kubelka and the Quay Brothers. Since then, the SOS has expanded its programme to include weekend seminars, intensive practical workshops, lectures, 'listening' events, consultancies for professional practitioners and, of course, the international symposium held every two years.
