    Lesson Plans: The Lesson Plans link has SO MANY lesson plans. They are designed at a middle school level but can easily be adapted (says them). The lesson plans are organized by Location/State; Theme; Time period; and Skill - meaning that you can click on any one of those subdivisions and search them that way. Very exciting! You should definitely check these out. Even if you're not in that state, they still have pictures, mapping materials, and activity ideas that you can use to incorporate geography into historic concepts. For example, the Battle of Bunker Hill lesson contains two maps (of Boston today and in 1775) and inquiry questions for these, a section of text (looks like a high school level to me) and inquiry questions for that AND three images (one a sketch of an encampment and two pictures) and inquiry questions for those. These might make fantastic "Do Now"s for the beginning of the lesson even if you didn't use any of the rest of the sites info. So neat!

Television, internet, and many other factors have changed the way we view war and receive our veterans. The lesson plan examines the conditions faced by troops returning from not just Iraq and Afghanistan today, but also from Vietnam and World War II. Like the other collection of lesson plans I posted earlier, this is material that can be a little bit emotional, especially for students who have a family or friend connection to veterans.

    This is a letter written by a parent into the Washington Post Education section. As an IB Diploma recipient, I find this extremely interesting, as the parent ignores all of the wonderful and beneficial things that one gets out of an IB education, questioning it because it doesn't allow his daughter to accelerate her math classes.

Students could, for example, use the "web quest" in the box below to learn about child soldiers and then give a presentation for the class about the various issues affecting child soldiers and their opinion of what should be done to help these youth and their communities.       The "Resources" page is the UN trying to be kid friendly. They have "student" versions of various treaties (and things) and UN Publications for download or order. If you were studying a specific international treaty or event the student versions contained here might be helpful (or you could go to the primary documents). I think it'd be better to have your students CREATE student versions of these documents than to use these, but there are some videos and some links that are helpful. The global map is outdated and slow. There are better maps elsewhere.

  • This lesson should be taught after the Articles of Confederation are taught. Students should have a knowledge of what the Articles of Confederation were and why they failed to work.

      This is a time when chronological teaching is most helpful because the Article of Confederations is the entire basis for the Constitution and that connection should be a main emphasis. The movie 1776 is an excellent way to teach the Articles because it is a musical, which helps the students remember the people, which can be confusing. It is also a way to incorporate multiple intelligences.
  • Make sure to arrange groups so that struggling students will be included into stronger groups. If a large number of these students are present, the entire activity can be done in a group discussion format.

    I will be teaching the Era of the Constitution this upcoming Wednesday. When I was in US history in high school we did a cool simulation where we played the roles of the convention's members and I thought this was a pretty good lesson plan for doing such an activity.

      So clearly the coolest link on this webpage is the "History" link. This will link you to the history of the FBI which is interesting in and of itself BUT also contains some links to primary documents. For example there is a link in 1966 called "six civil rights activists murdered" that takes you to the FBI file of the murder investigation. It might be really neat to have students look at this file and look at other accounts of this incident to understand how police/FBI officers interact with communities and crime. There's another neat account under June 1933 of the Kansas City Massacre!

      The "FBI Investigates" tab is a little like the spy museum. It takes you through two cases, what happened and how investigators solved the crime. For any CSI - philes this might be some great info.

      "FBI Adventures" is a little not as cool as I'd hoped. While they do give brief snapshots of country profiles, students don't get to actually investigate anything on their own. What they Could do is begin to see how even crime is globalized and how countries now have to work together to protect citizens - an interesting angle on globalization/global studies.

    Again, the Diigo isn't working so . . . There is a "planning checklist" on the site that has printable checklists of things students can do every year starting in 9th grade to prepared themselves for college. Teachers should explain to students that these are not absolutely necessary so that kids don't hyperventilate, but for kids needing to see progress towards a goal, these might be useful

    There is a "hard facts" tab that has some of the facts about parental income, race, and expected income. If students don't think it's important to go to college, some of these facts might shake them up and make them realize how important and how difficult it may be for them to go. This might inspire a school project where students determine how many of their classmates plan to go to college and where they want to go and why or some such thing.

    The "inspiration" tab has great quotes that teachers might consider putting up around the room and great books that teachers might consider assigning to their students.

    Thanks for posting this article, it came at just the right time for me because my students need so much help and now that their counselors were fired, they are screwed. For example, the Ibero-American Youth Forum was just held in Seville, Spain for spanish speaking youth interested in discussing global tourism and global landscapes. These are great opportunities to get students involved in international issues.

      The sources for this site are other teachers around the world who post their lesson plans. This is good, because it has plans from real teachers and real classrooms so they are very knowlegable in what they are doing.

      However, one bad thing about the site sources is that primary sources are generally not included in the lesson plan, so you would have to find those on your own.

      The problem with the lesson plans is that they are not listed in any particular order and are all large plans that take a long time to complete. As such, this site could be used to find a project that you want your class to do, but it could not be used on a regular basis because you won't always have time to do the long projects as listed here.

      This site could be valuable for social studies teachers because it offers lesson plans written by teachers, covering a wide range of topics and suited for different couuntries. However, this diversity also means that not everything important is covered, and as such the site should only be used as an occasional supplement, not a basic source for your lesson plans.
