This is the official website of the Tenement Museum in NYC. I LOVE this museum, and if you have yet to have seen it, I highly recommend visiting the next time you are in the city. I have added this page mostly because of the "virtual tour" you can take of one of their tenements, which could be used as a resource for teachers who cannot take students there in person. They also have a number of primary document lesson plans available for different age ranges. Their exhibits are revealing of the lives led by immigrants in late 19th and early 20th century New York City.

I can't make this event, but it could be really interesting!

This is an awesome sight to use for ancient world studies. By clicking on the "new site" button, you can view a virtual tour of the La Grotte de Lascaux, in France....the site in in English and offers french and spanish as well. The tour is about 6 minutes or so. Anyway, I used this for my 7th grade class yesterday and they really got into it. They had all sorts of questions about the paintings, the lifestyle, etc.

The students were surprised to be able to see something that was written by humans nearly 17,000 years ago and 3000 miles away.

The Newseum offers a variety of resources for teachers including detailed lesson plans with worksheets, free tours for DC studetns and their chaperone, professional development opportunities for techers and educational classes for students and on topics including the First Amendment, Berlin Wall, Woodstock, and headlines of history. The lesson plans are thorough and easisly adapted. I am going to adapt one of their lesson on the First Ammendment called "You Can't Say That?"

White House Interactive Tour and Presidential History

This website contains a great list of Historic Sites in DC - for example, I have bookmarked the page for the Old Stone House in Georgetown. If you select, "List of Sites" - you will be taken to a listing by neighborhoods of other historic sites in the DC area. This could allow you to search for places near your school that could be a great resource to incorporate into your lessons. Many, including the Old Stone House, offer tours throughout the day. The Old Stone House is also staffed by well-informed Park Rangers who are eager to share their knowledge.

I absolutely love the UNESCO World Heritage Center website because it offers thousands of ideas for out-of-class exploration of cultural sites. All you have to do is click on the World Heritage List and scroll to your country's list of locations. You can visit most of these sites free of charge and they offer tours and kid-friendly information on the site. This site could also be used as a way to formulate upper-level discussion about what culture is and who gets to decide what cultures (and what parts of a specific culture) are worth saving.

A few years ago I was taking a tour of a dome shaped house, and the architect explained to me that domes are an optical illusion. Whenever someone enters a room, their eyes inadvertently glance up at the corners of the room to give them the contextual dimensions of the space they're in.
