Maths Online - Decimal numberline tool - 1 views

  •
"The Decimal Number Line tool allows teachers to display and interact with a number line. The number line can be moved around and zoomed bigger or smaller. Teachers can decide on which units are displayed and also whether unit marks are displayed. What's really cool is that teachers and students can move an arrow back and forth above the number and when they're ready, they can touch above the arrow to reveal the arrow's location on the number line. The number can be turned off and on just by touching above the arrow. " description by Jim Hollis

Curriculum Leadership Journal | Fast, frustrating and the future: ICT, new technologies... - 0 views

  • In one study, a team of researchers from Keele University (Miller, Glover & Averis nd) investigated the use of IWBs by mathematics teachers. They found that teachers pass through three pedagogic phases as they learn to use IWBs effectively. In the first phase, the supported didactic, teachers use the technology in the same way as an ordinary whiteboard. The second phase, interactive, involves deeper understanding of the technology and results in teachers using it to enhance traditional teaching rather than as ‘the driving force for conceptual understanding and cognitive development’ (ibid).By contrast, those teachers who used IWBs most effectively were in the enhanced interactivity phase. These teachers used techniques to:offer the same idea in different ways until … all the group understand, and this requires meticulous planning and the need for continuous assessment so that whether answering at the IAW (IWB) or on their own whiteboards, whether using individual or small group work, and whether working on examples or investigations, pupils are challenged not only to say what but also why (ibid).Where teachers were working at the enhanced interactivity phase, three underlying principles seemed to be present:1. The technology was used to support a lesson structure based on an introduction or starter, a developmental phase based on a sequence of learning incidents, and a plenary to review learning and contribute to metacognitive learning of the subject.2. Most teachers were undertaking lesson planning that had a sequence of discernible cognitive aims and a series of activities to explore, develop, explain and reinforce both developing concepts and subsequent understanding.3. There was a high level of teacher recognition that pupils learn in different ways and the IAW was used to promote diversity of aesthetic, verbal, numeric and kinaesthetic experiences (ibid).

HelpKidzLearn - TrainTracker - 0 views

drag tracks into the play space, push start to run the train . "I'm sure TrainTracker will be a big hit in the early primary grades and for older special needs children. It's also one of those great websites to bookmark at home and have your young children learn how to use a mouse while building their own little adventure world. Teachers could also utilize this site as a fun "memory helper" by drawing out a train track layout on the Smart Board and then see how well the students can recreate the layout using TrainTracker." notes from James Hollis

good site for demonstrating online Inquiry in a data base
  •
from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. Animal Diversity Web (ADW) is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology at the University of Michigan Animal Diversity Web Has * Thousands of species accounts about individual animal species. These may include text, pictures of living animals, photographs and movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text of these accounts and we cannot guarantee their accuracy. * Descriptions of levels of organization above the species level, especially phyla, classes, and in some cases, orders and families. Hundreds of hyperlinked pages and images illustrate the traits and general biology of these groups. Professional biologists prepare this part. Animal Diversity Web Is An Online Encyclopedia. ADW is a large searchable encyclopedia of the natural history of animals. Every day, thousands of classroom students and informal visitors use it to answer animal questions. Other sites specialize in local, endangered, or particular kinds of animals. We aim to be as comprehensive as possible. A Science Learning Tool. ADW facilitates inquiry-driven learning, that is, teaching about science by leading students to use the methods of science. Our large database is structured, providing consistent information for all species to foster comparisons. An advanced search tool allows a user to call up species accounts fitting any combination of descriptors. Students can explore for patterns and relationships, learn how to frame and answer scientific questions and, with the help of a good teacher, experience the excitement and satisfaction of doing science. Our long-term goal is to create a database rich enough that students can discover for themselves basic concepts in ecology and conservation biology.
