"Finding new tactics for teaching digital citizenship to older studentss is difficult because most educator resources don't stray far from the traditional Thou Shalt Not approach. That's what prompted me to look for my own resources. In doing so, I came up with a three-pronged approach that engages my students in discussions about digital citizenship rather than patronizing them."

"The greatest software invented for human safety is the human brain. It's time that we start using those brains. We must mix head knowledge with action. In the classroom, there are two essential approaches in the digital citizenship curriculum that Vicki Davis uses to teach: proactive knowledge and experiential knowledge. "Proactive Knowledge: I want my students to know the "9 Key Ps" of digital citizenship. I teach them about these aspects and how to use them. "A nice class activity when the books being read by the students have specific locations for the settings. You can create a book map using My Maps from Google to highlight the settings in which these texts took place."

Useful tips from a classroom teacher. "Using forms in Google docs lets anyone create forms quickly and share those forms via email, embed them into a webpage or blog. If you are a teacher, you can create formulas that allow you to have these forms graded in minutes. The formula part is a bit challenging, so I wrote this article to talk about how I recently created a final for one of my classes."

This is a great visual to back up my teaching. We had a session last week where I was explaining this information to a year 8 science class as they embarked on a major research project. You know some" get it" but others are still struggle with evaluating a source even if the agree as to the why. This is clean and concise.

I liked this for the Lego Creation Stationhowever there are more ideas here. "At this station, I have pre packaged 4 different ziplock bags of 100 legos each.  Students will choose the lego bag, and take a planning sheet.  Students are asked to draw and write about what they are planning to create.  (The boys in my class are crazy about lego so I thought this would be a great motivator for them.)  Students then will build their creation using their blueprint.  When they are finished, they will take a picture of their creation, add it to the class book that I have created on the Book Creator App and write a summary of their creation and how it compared to what they had originally planned."

"Children learn through play and exploration. From floating sticks downstream to ducks in the tub, early lessons in how the world works come from play.  By building upon play, a mode of learning that is rooted in curiosity and joy, we can engage our students in a truly authentic way. For instance, a project involving electronics can be launched with a session with circuit boards, or wood working with a one-block challenge. Both of these activities originate from two of my favorite resources for exploration-based maker activities: the Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium, and the Makerspace at the New York Hall of Science. "

This visual encyclopedia is created by the publisher DK. It is new, so somewhat limited but they have plans to grow. I see it as useful for younger students, ESL students and special education students. The site is easy to use and has clear categories. It also offers other sections: What's New?. Videos. Quizzes. Fun Facts. Galleries. Another section called My Space will also be added. Teachers may create an account and access a lesson planner. The DK Online World Desk Reference may also be of interest. You need to create an account to use it which takes seconds to do. This site "explores topics in physical and human geography for every country in the world, and practices critical-thinking skills

"The edshelf platform functions as a kind of shopping mall for websites, mobile apps, and desktop programs.  All items are rated & reviewed by parents & educators, for parents & educators. It can be used it to present and archive professional development sessions, to suggest a range of tool options for a variety of class projects, as a launchpad widget on full pages of my LibGuides, and as a menu to use and share real-time with participants during conference sessions."

"Photos For Class makes it easy for students to quickly find copyright-free images that are automatically cited upon download." This will be a useful tool for helping to teach my students about being good digital citizens and understaning more about cpoyright and creative commons licensing. I also want them to correctly to cite sources and in the easiest way.

"Media literacy is an important skill for all young people and so is the value of social media as a teaching, learning, and publishing tool. This post discusses the approach of one educator when trying to develop her students' skills. Digital literacy doesn't just naturally develop any more than print literacy does, and All learning happens through reflection and revision. So, my students must have guided practice analyzing and using social media if they are to use it purposefully, productively, and safely"

An interesting article comparing the ways in which we read in print and onscreen. The author discusses the results he gathered between 2013 and 201. He obtained data from 429 university students drawn from five countries (the U.S., Japan, Germany, Slovenia and India). The students in my study reported that print was aesthetically more enjoyable, saying things such as "I like the smell of paper" or that reading in print is "real reading." What's more, print gave them a sense of where they were in the book - they could "see" and "feel" where they were in the text.

"There are lots of ways to incorporate video into the classroom. From capturing students' attention as you kick off a lesson, to providing context for a new learning experience, teachers use videos in lots of different ways. Whether you are looking for a clip to send home to students via Google Classroom or want to connect a video link for a QR code scavenger hunt, educational 360 videos are worth exploring. 360 video gives students the power to explore a space from every angle. YouTube hosts a range of 360 video content and one of my favorites is from the BBC. On the BBC's YouTube channel you'll find different types of video options for a virtual visit to places around the world. As you search through their content you'll see that they've tagged their videos as 360 to make it especially easy to find."

"The best way to choose a good book is through your child."
