The purpose of this study was to improve the quality of students' online discussion of assigned readings in an online course. To improve the focus, depth, and connectedness of online discussion, the first author designed a text-focused Wiki that simultaneously displayed the assigned reading and students' comments side by side in adjacent columns. In the text-focused Wiki, students were able to read the assigned text in the left column and type their comments or questions in the right column adjacent to the sentence or passage that sparked their interest. In post-participation surveys, data were gathered about students' experiences in the text-focused Wiki and prior experiences in threaded discussion forums. Students reported more focus, depth, flow, idea generation, and enjoyment in the text-focused Wiki.

The project KiWi is concerned with knowledge management in Semantic Wikis and funded by the European Commission under the Project Number 211932 in the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). KiWi's objective is to investigate how knowledge management in highly dynamic environments can be supported using Semantic Wiki technologies, and how Semantic Wikis can be improved to satisfy the requirements of knowledge management. For this purpose, KiWi will * implement an advanced knowledge management system based on the Semantic Wiki IkeWiki and extend it by improved, rule-based reasoning support, information extraction, personalisation, and advanced visualisations and editors * verify the system on two use cases in the areas of project knowledge management and software knowledge management, with flexible workflow models and specific support for the respective application areas.

IkeWiki is a new kind of Wiki (a Semantic Wiki ) developed by SalzburgResearch that allows users to annotate pages and links between pages with semantic annotations. Such annotations are useful because they give machines a certain amount of "understanding" of the content that goes beyond merely displaying the page. This information can then e.g. be used for context-specific presentation of pages, advanced querying, consistency verification or drawing conclusions. Currently, IkeWiki can make use of some of the knowledge represented in RDFS and OWL schemas to display enhanced navigation tools. Furthermore, we implemented a sample "biology ontology" that automatically displays a taxonomy box for biological objects. Although IkeWiki looks and behaves like Wikipedia/MediaWiki in many aspects, it is a complete rewrite, and the system design significantly differs from other Wikis. IkeWiki makes full use of Semantic Web technologies like RDF(S) and OWL using the Jena RDF store, and is implemented as an AJAX-based Rich Internet Application, based on the Dojo Toolkit

A wiki for the life sciences where authorship matters : Abstract : Nature Genetics - 0 views

  •
WikiGenes is the first wiki system to combine the collaborative and largely altruistic possibilities of wikis with explicit authorship. In view of the extraordinary success of Wikipedia there remains no doubt about the potential of collaborative publishing, yet its adoption in science has been limited. Here I discuss a dynamic collaborative knowledge base for the life sciences that provides authors with due credit and that can evolve via continual revision and traditional peer review into a rigorous scientific tool.

AceWiki is a semantic wiki that is powerful and at the same time easy to use. Making use of the controlled natural language ACE, the formal statements of the wiki are shown in a way that looks like natural English. In order to help the users to write correct ACE sentences, AceWiki provides a predictive authoring tool.

CoW, a Controllable Wiki: Overview - 0 views

  •
CoW is a "Controllable Wiki" and CMS that supports collaborative document creation with asynchonous off-line editing. CoW is desiged to make it easy to add interaction to static websites, and to support concurrent editing and off-line working with straightforward synchronisation (using Subversion). The system also serves as a test-bed for experiments in controlled languages for round-trip ontology engineering (from the GATE project: http://gate.ac.uk/).

SWiM: A Semantic Wiki for Mathematical Knowledge Management - 0 views

  •
SWiM is a semantic wiki for collaboratively building, editing and browsing a mathematical knowledge base. Its pages, containing mathematical theories, are stored in OMDoc, a markup format for mathematical knowledge. Our long-term objective is to develop a software that facilitates the creation of a shared, public collection of mathematical knowledge (e.g. for education) and serves work groups of mathematicians as a tool for collaborative development of new theories.

Genome Biology | Full text | Calling on a million minds for community annotation in Wik... - 0 views

  •
WikiProteins enables community annotation in a Wiki-based system. Extracts of major data sources have been fused into an editable environment that links out to the original sources. Data from community edits create automatic copies of the original data. Semantic technology captures concepts co-occurring in one sentence and thus potential factual statements. In addition, indirect associations between concepts have been calculated. We call on a 'million minds' to annotate a 'million concepts' and to collect facts from the literature with the reward of collaborative knowledge discovery. The system is available for beta testing at http://www.wikiprofessional.org

CZ:Citizendium Press Releases - Jan242008 - Citizendium - 0 views

  •
In a striking departure from traditional methods of teaching, a new way for students to gain course credits is emerging. The Eduzendium initiative was proposed by Dr. Sorin A. Matei (Purdue University). In collaboration with Dr. Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia and now Editor-in-Chief of the Citizendium, and a group of Purdue graduate students, he has designed a set of template policies, rules and educational methods that allow incorporating wiki style collaboration in the educational process. The policies have been pretested at Purdue and will soon be released to the educational community through Eduzendium.

Open Participation Software for Java - OPS4J - OPS4J - 0 views

  •
OPS4J stands for Open Participation Software for Java, and this community is trying to build a new, more open model for Open Source development, where not only the usage is Open and Free, but the Participation is Open as well. Removal of barriers, let more people in, have more fun and less politics. I have also seen Open Development as a term to describe this. Think of it as Wiki brought to Coding. Wikipedia is of course the most outstanding example of open collaboration.
