All conferences and research events have much informal related content spread around the Internet, including abstracts, papers, presentations and audio/visual material. Locating this content can be difficult and time-consuming. Using semantic web tools, IUGO is investigating how to organise and provide access to this valuable information.

The Semantic Web isn't just about putting data on the web. It is about making links, so that a person or machine can explore the web of data. With linked data, when you have some of it, you can find other, related, data. Like the web of hypertext, the web of data is constructed with documents on the web. However, unlike the web of hypertext, where links are relationships anchors in hypertext documents written in HTML, for data they links between arbitrary things described by RDF,. The URIs identify any kind of object or concept. But for HTML or RDF, the same expectations apply to make the web grow: 1. Use URIs as names for things 2. Use HTTP URIs so that people can look up those names. 3. When someone looks up a URI, provide useful information. 4. Include links to other URIs. so that they can discover more things.

SMORE is a tool that allows users to markup their documents in RDF using web ontologies in association with user-specific terms and elements. The aim of this software is as follows: To provide the user with a flexible environment in which he can create his web page without too many hindrances involving markup To allow the user to markup his document with minimal knowledge of RDF terms and syntax. However, the user should be able to semantically classify his data set for annotation i.e. breakup sentences into the basic subject-predicate-object model To provide a reference to existing ontologies on the Internet in order to use more precise references in his own web page/text. The user can also create his own ontology from scratch and borrow terms from existing ontologies To ensure accurate and complete RDF markup with scope to make modifications easily

VoCamp is a series (hopefully) of informal events where people can spend some dedicated time creating lightweight vocabularies/ontologies for the Semantic Web/Web of Data. The emphasis of the event(s) is not on creating the perfect ontology in a particular domain, but on creating vocabs that are good enough for people to start using for publishing data on the Web. The intention is to follow a "paper first, laptops second" format, where the modelling is done initially on paper and only later committed to code. The VoCamp idea is heavily influenced by BarCamp, although the VoCamp should only have presentations where strictly necessary.

MICRA is hosting the COSMO (COmmon Semantic MOdel) ontology, a public, open foundation ontology that is intended to include all the basic elements required to specify the meanings of any more specific concept in any domain.

Linked Data is a term used to describe a recommended best practice for exposing, sharing, and connecting pieces of data on the Semantic Web. The practice emphasizes Web access to data using existing Web technologies such as URIs and HTTP. It also emphasizes links between related Web resources.

Sensemaking is the process through which humans put together understanding of related information. Sensemaking has been said to involve changes in cognitive representations during a human information processing task. Collection sensemaking involves understanding a collection of media entities, as a whole. One example of a sensemaking task is to compare the damage from Hurricane Katrina to homes, personal effects, and community buildings in different areas of New Orleans. Connected visual and semantic representations provide perspective to support users involved in collection sensemaking tasks. A zoomable map organizes images based on location at varying scales. Multiscale clusters based on zoom level organize images associated with events. The clusters afford contextualized thumbnail browsing and also maintain uniform information density on the map. Metadata enhances context and memory in the process of collection sensemaking.

Interdisciplinary research programs at Harvard and elsewhere naturally tend to be distributed geographically, across campuses and departments. Effective collaboration for these programs requires the ability to bridge distance, which in turn implies digital collaboration, and therefore abilities to publish and discuss on-line content such as articles, news, and perspectives; to provide semantic context to on-line content for more powerful interactions within multiple sub-disciplines and to integrate as well as distinguish the individual contributions of many scientific workers.

Capturing knowledge by using markup techniques and by supporting semantic annotations is a major technique for creating metadata. It is beneficial in a wide range of content-oriented intelligent applications.

In order to keep data structures in Semantic CrunchBase close to the source API, I used a 1-to-1 mapping between CrunchBase JSON keys and RDF terms (with only a few exceptions). This was helpful for people knowing the JSON API, but it wasn't easy to interlink the converted information with existing SemWeb data such as FOAF, or the various LOD sources.

LT4eL (Language Technology for e-Learning) develops a framework of multilingual language technology tools and semantic web techniques for improving the retrieval and the metadata annotation of learning material.

The Object-Oriented Hypermedia Design Method (OOHDM) (and its successor, the Semantic Hypermedia Design Method, SHDM) allow the concise specification and implementation of hypermedia (web) applications. AceWiki is a semantic wiki that is powerful and at the same time easy to use. Making use of the controlled natural language ACE, the formal statements of the wiki are shown in a way that looks like natural English. In order to help the users to write correct ACE sentences, AceWiki provides a predictive authoring tool.

Extreme Tagging Systems allow for tagging the tags and tagging relations between the tags.

Augmented Wordnets These lexical resources (and the method of their construction) are described in Semantic Taxonomy Induction from Heterogenous Evidence (ACL-06). They are automatically augmented versions of WordNet 2.1

Primary Objectives * Build a demo that spans from bench to bedside using RDF and OWL. * Explore the effectiveness of current tools. * Document our finding to help accelerate adoption of the Semantic Web.

The primary success criteria for the next two days will be the publication of new vocabularies on the Web that increase the availability of Linked Data. That's the main goal, but there are many others. I am confident that this first VoCamp will be an opportunity to share issues, expertise, modeling techniques and design patterns. In doing so we will all become smarter. There is an opportunity to scope requirements in the wider Semantic Web field that impact upon the availability and reuse of vocabularies. Collectively we can identify missing pieces of the technical infrastructure required by the Web of Data, and begin to build a social infrastructure that helps us collectively ease the vocabulary bottleneck.
