While I understand the principles behind AntStorm's voting system for regulatory purposes, I wondered if it would be more useful for voting to occur from any user after the fact, similar to StumbleUpon or Reddit. My main concern about the voting system was that it would require too much time on the part of the group members, who would need to vote for every single item submitted to a group. To this concern, Wilson explained that the AntStorm voting system is designed to work effectively without participation from all group members, and Wilson's hope for AntStorm is to have such dedicated group members that will have only a handful of interest groups, enabling them to readily devote time towards those topics which are of greatest importance to them.

This ethnographic study investigates how a project group deals with the contradiction between distributed knowledge in boundary-spanning collaborative processes and the expectation that software systems will provide unified, codified knowledge. Group and individual activities were observed over a period of 18 months, to examine the ways knowledge was presented, recognized, shared, or otherwise managed during joint design of business process and IT systems change. The study explores how knowledge and expertise were translated across organizational boundaries, and identifies four stages in the development of group understanding of how to manage sensemaking and expertise across knowledge boundaries: focus on defining shared goals; acknowledging and sharing tacit knowledge about organizational practice; identifying external influences; and explicit knowledge generation.

The W3C OWL 2 Web Ontology Language (OWL) is a Semantic Web language designed to represent ontologies - information about how individuals are grouped and fit together in a particular domain. OWL can represent rich and complex information about classes of individuals and their properties. OWL is a logical language, where every construct has a well-defined meaning, meanings that fit together to support exact and useful representation of many different kinds of information. OWL groups information into ontologies in the form of documents that can be stored and transmitted across the World Wide Web in the same way that data and other kinds of information are and that can be completely and effectively processed by tools that extract the information implicit in an ontology.

Social capital is the invisible stock of connections between people that makes collaboration possible. It basically measures trust and how people really care for one another. When members of a group know each other very well and share the same values, social capital is high. When they don't and have no shared awareness of the situation facing the group, the same words can mean very different things to them, and the trust level is low. Social capital and culture go hand in hand.

Virtual worlds are governed not only by the source code used to develop the world, but also by civil code documents that establish a governance structure that constrains the interactions of users of the virtual world and regulates relationships among stakeholders of the virtual world. While previous research has examined specific aspects of these documents, this paper analyzes these governing documents as a totality. By examining the totality of and the interplay among the governing documents of a number of established social worlds, this paper seeks to discover insights that can prove valuable both for scholarly understanding of social world governance and for the various stakeholders of social worlds. Following this analysis, the paper offers a set of policy recommendations and considerations to facilitate the development of governing documents that more democratically and equally serve the needs and rights of all stakeholders in virtual worlds. The paper concludes that virtual worlds and their governing documents are boundary objects with agency, in that they are the result of interactions among stakeholder groups and in turn reshape the relationships among those stakeholder groups.

Cyberinfrastructure for Phylogenetic Research (CIPRES) project is an open collaboration funded by the National Science Foundation. The group is led by Tandy Warnow and involves researchers (biologists, computer scientists, statisticians, and mathematicians) at sixteen institutions. The goal of the CIPRES project is to enable large-scale phylogenetic reconstructions on a scale that will enable analyses of huge data sets containing hundreds of thousands of bio molecular sequences. The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists and nature enthusiasts from around the world. On more than 10,000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about biodiversity, the characteristics of different groups of organisms, and their evolutionary history (phylogeny). Each page contains information about a particular group, e.g., salamanders, segmented worms, phlox flowers, tyrannosaurs, euglenids, Heliconius butterflies, club fungi, or the vampire squid. ToL pages are linked one to another hierarchically, in the form of the evolutionary tree of life. Starting with the root of all Life on Earth and moving out along diverging branches to individual species, the structure of the ToL project thus illustrates the genetic connections between all living things.

SWiM is a semantic wiki for collaboratively building, editing and browsing a mathematical knowledge base. Its pages, containing mathematical theories, are stored in OMDoc, a markup format for mathematical knowledge. Our long-term objective is to develop a software that facilitates the creation of a shared, public collection of mathematical knowledge (e.g. for education) and serves work groups of mathematicians as a tool for collaborative development of new theories.
