Clay Shirky: How Twitter can make history | Video on TED.com - 0 views

  •
While news from Iran streams to the world, Clay Shirky shows how Facebook, Twitter and TXTs help citizens in repressive regimes to report on real news, bypassing censors (however briefly). The end of top-down control of news is changing the nature of politics.

Media Cloud - 0 views

  •
Media Cloud is a system that lets you see the flow of the media. The Internet is fundamentally altering the way that news is produced and distributed, but there are few comprehensive approaches to understanding the nature of these changes. Media Cloud automatically builds an archive of news stories and blog posts from the web, applies language processing, and gives you ways to analyze and visualize the data.

Jeff Jonas: Accumulating Context: Now or Never - 0 views

  •
Sensing importance across a sea of dynamic systems with constantly changing data requires the accumulation and persistence of context. (I am using the term persistence here to mean storing/saving what one has observed and learned - in a database for example.)

The GoodRelations ontology provides the vocabulary for annotating e-commerce offerings (1) to sell, lease, repair, dispose, and maintain commodity products and (2) to provide commodity services. GoodRelations allows describing the relationship between (1) Web resources, (2) offerings made by those Web resources, (3) legal entities, (4) prices, (5) terms and conditions, and the aforementioned ontologies for products and services (6). For more information, see http://purl.org/goodrelations/ Note: The base URI of GoodRelations has changed to http://purl.org/goodrelations/v1. Please make sure you are only using element identifiers in this namespace, e.g. http://purl.org/goodrelations/v1#BusinessEntity. T

The effect of open access and downloads ('hits') on citation impact: a bibliography of ... - 0 views

  •
Despite significant growth in the number of research papers available through open access, principally through author self-archiving in institutional archives, it is estimated that only c. 20% of the number of papers published annually are open access. It is up to the authors of papers to change this. Why might open access be of benefit to authors? One universally important factor for all authors is impact, typically measured by the number of times a paper is cited (some older studies have estimated monetary returns to authors from article publication via the role citations play in determining salaries). Recent studies have begun to show that open access increases impact. More studies and more substantial investigations are needed to confirm the effect, although a simple example demonstrates the effect.

Decision Making: In making sense of complexity, have we become gutless? | Theknowledgec... - 0 views

  • Are we creating illusions for ourselves, creating hope that we are making sense of our complex world?
  • we are creating illusions to reinforce our belief that we are controlling a complex and random world.

A fantastic read to wake up your brain and help it see the trappings of false illusions and patterns around you.

informal coalitions: The dynamics of continuity and change in organizations - an analogy - 0 views

  •
Global (e.g. organization-wide) patterns emerge from everyday 'local' (i.e. one-to-one or small-group) conversations. The more that people (in interaction) make sense of events and take action in particular ways, the more likely they are to make similar sense and take similar actions in the future. That is, from an informal coalitions perspective, these patterns are not formed by managerial dictat or design but by the nature of the everyday sensemaking that has gone before.

Global warming is changing organic matter in soil - 0 views

  •
Soil organic matter is what makes dirt fertile and able to support plant life - both of which are especially important for agriculture. Organic matter retains water in the soil and prevents erosion. Natural processes of decomposition of soil organic matter provide plants and microbes with the energy source and water they need to grow, and carbon is released into the atmosphere as a by-product of this process. Warming temperatures are expected to speed up this process which will increase the amount of CO2 that is transferred to the atmosphere.

Geoscale engineering to avert dangerous climate change - 0 views

  •
It is now recognised that the developed world is struggling to meet its carbon-reduction targets, while emissions by China and India have soared. Meanwhile, signs suggest that the climate is even more sensitive to atmospheric CO2 levels than was previously thought.
