VenueSeen is a new company that allows companies to use Instagram for advertising campaigns. The tool aggregates photos that have been labeled with  specific hashtag and brings [the Instagram user] to the company's campaign page.  Instagrammers can then claim their photograph and collect prizes, coupons, and other incentives the company may have put in place. Price for a campaign can range from under $1000/month to tens of thousands depending on the scope and reach of the project.

Instagram has been around for two years but it's really only taken off since the beginning of 2012. Since this is the first calendar year in which it's been a major social media player it is interesting to see the records it keeps breaking in terms of most popular day yet on Insta. In the past month both Hurricane Sandy and now Thanksgiving have broken the record. I can only imagine that X-mas next month will keep the records going - people love to Instagram food pictures.

Really interesting read about Instagram disabling its compatibility with Instagram - which officially has nothing to do with it being owned by Facebook. Especially interesting to read about the focus on financial gain. Social media is often hailed as bringing people together - but is it really just a flashy reinforcement of the structures that be?

Interesting article about the first change to Instagram since Facebook's purchase. They also make interesting comments about how Facebook was more productive when it was a primarily mobile only site, invoking more raw emotion and allowing you to be "more real" on Insta than on other social media sites.

I thought this was an interesting article. Even though I personally don't have Instagram, I know a lot of people do. Looks like there is a new competitor on the horizon!

Facebook is thinking of getting rid of its policy of allowing users to vote on changes to major governance policy. It also notes that a vote is only binding if 30% of users participate - a number they didn't reached in their last two votes.

Instragram moves over to the web. At one point users who didn't have iphones or androids couldn't use this app. Wonder if it has to do with Facebook buying it?

Facebook picking up cues from instagram and adding editing software to their IOS app. Social construction of technology? 

I thought this was interesting considering we have been talking about user generated content. Also, it is a good example of how social media has changed the way we look at major events.

It seems like Twitter's been busy upgrading its service to be more visual-oriented. is this a counter move to Facebook's purchase and integration of Instagram? Does it make sense in the Twitterverse to have the ability to add filters/effects to twitpics?
