This article from the summer discusses First Nations leaders use of social media in the recent AFN election for National Chief. It is interesting because it talks about the impact of new new media for voters in remote communities. 

This article is a little saucy, but shows interesting developments in how we are now using wifi to overcome some of the physical barriers/challenges of long distance romantic relationships.

I know many of us place high value on online customer reviews. Think of this site as the "Urban Spoon" of software and apps. You can browse technologies by theme (creative, customers, team, productivity etc.) view screen shots and read user reviews. You can also browse compiled lists of technologies posted by users of the site. Ex. "how I manage my retail business" or "28 ideas for an awesome office" This site might be helpful exploring technologies for our research paper!

This is our future? Are the days of the Archie comicbook now obsolete? Wil our kids and grandkids, now use tablets to peruse the world of comicbooks?

Looking at how a politician turns to reddit to see legislative advice. Showing how technology/social media is being used to engage the public on political issues- even the future of their governance.

This article summarizes the use of Twitter during the recent battle in Gaza. It brings up some important questions regarding ethics and use of social media during military conflicts.

Really interesting how people are using their digital devices to tell their stories and capture memories. A common social trend in my opinion.

PR Daily shared a list of 25 quotes regarding the power of social networking. I think this list is pretty fitting after our MPC Evening with Industry event, and with all of us looking for or landing internships. I particularly liked this one: "Network continually - 85 percent of all jobs are filled through contacts & personal references." 

About defending our right to free content as governments (such as germany's) threaten to start charging for snippets of searches on the web.

Interesting article on the increasing trend of live-blogging in mainstream news coverage - specifically refers to two Toronto-based start up companies: ScribbleLive and CoveritLive.  The Globe and Mail for instance used ScribbleLive to cover Hurricane Sandy. 

Interesting article in relation to our discussion of technological determinism - are we shaping the tools or are they shaping us?

In light of our conversation about Prezi last class, here is an article that suggests Prezi is more than just a presentation tool, but rather can be used by businesses to advertise their services, or introduce their products on their websites. You can even develop a website entirely in Prezi by first creating the Prezi and then linking to it with an iframe tag.

An interesting site focusing on the evolution of visual communication. The author takes you through communication via rocks and caves, the printing press, the computer etc...It's an interesting read as it allows us to thoroughly understand how communication tools progressed at the speed of light since the Latin typographic system. 

In my previous job, we used virtual conferencing on a daily basis. As a media communications company, we were seeking the best conferencing software out there, and we finally found it: Open-tok (tokbox) Please check this page out as it may change your virtual communication lives in your work or home environments! When users are not paying for services up front, the publisher must extract a "cost" somewhere. Online, this cost is our attention, our time. We pay for social media with pieces of our lives-whether it's because a blog baits us into reading something or a game tricks us into sticking around long after we should have left-and these bits of life are sold to advertisers, literally, for pennies.

Related to today's seminar, Wal Mart seems to be one of the top companies using social media in an innovative and successful way.
