Our previous VisCom class on typography and composition got me thinking about the rise of lyric videos on YouTube. Music and typography come together in an expected way. Compare the use of typography to convey the song in this and Adele's Skyfall.

Compare and contrast the mood of this song with that of Katy Perry's Part of Me and how each video employed typography differently. I love how this is bringing type back into a medium that feels driven by...non-type.

Helvetica the movie is a documentary about typography, graphic design, and visual culture. It discusses how a sans serif typeface created in the 1950s has become one of the most widely used, yet, for the unassuming, least noticed in the world.

An interesting site focusing on the evolution of visual communication. The author takes you through communication via rocks and caves, the printing press, the computer etc...It's an interesting read as it allows us to thoroughly understand how communication tools progressed at the speed of light since the Latin typographic system. 

The Swiss style isn't actually "Swiss." It refers to a global movement towards simplified, structured design, evident in both composition/layout and type. This distinctively bold approach can be seen everywhere - just keep your eyes open the next time you flip through a magazine or walk through the Eaton Centre.
