This is a documentary and brief article about some of the dangers of sharing personal information on social media. I haven't watched it yet, but I think it looks pretty relevant to what we discussed in class on Monday, so it is on my "to do" list

This article is pretty relevant to the readings we have for this week. I found it interesting that despite having many friends on Facebook, the author defines all of his "real" friends by things that they do in face-to-face situations, which doesn't really consider long distance relationships.

Something interesting (and a tad bit morbid) to think about.

Interesting article in relation to our discussion of technological determinism - are we shaping the tools or are they shaping us?

When users are not paying for services up front, the publisher must extract a "cost" somewhere. Online, this cost is our attention, our time. We pay for social media with pieces of our lives-whether it's because a blog baits us into reading something or a game tricks us into sticking around long after we should have left-and these bits of life are sold to advertisers, literally, for pennies.

When we talk about sharing online, we often forget that through sharing, credibility and accountability for copyright is lost.

A real example of the democratic potential of social media...

10% of business reviews will be fake by 2014 -- I found this shocking! Sure, don't believe everything you read online but 10 per cent? If you're a communications manager relying on reviews to promote your company or build trust among customers, how do you maintain your integrity if this kind of statistic is floating around?

OTTAWA - Tony Clement may be king of social media in political circles on Parliament Hill, but he didn't get to be mayor of his own Twitter town hall. During an online chat on the subject of open government, the Treasury Board president, who is a prolific tweeter, had a ghostwriter doing most of the work for him.

I thought this was an interesting article connecting the social media platform of twitter with the political world.

Facebook is now tracking votes in the American election through people's Facebook status updates. Very cool

I think this is a new aspect in the reporter/journalist vs. citizen journalist debate. Really interesting how there is already a policy in place regarding live-tweeting from the athletic department at the University of Washington. "Social media has irreversibly altered the media landscape, and the power relationship between big content brands, individual reporters and fans. But the major money makers - ad-rich TV and radio, in particular - will always, or at least for the foreseeable future, remain in the control of the powerful. So it's best for them to lay off the micromanaging, and accept some bit of change."

Facebook is now automatically creating 'couple' pages for anyone who is linked to another person through relationship status. There is no opt out option and Facebook pulls in any pictures or check in's in which you have both been tagged. I'm not sure if I'm more bothered by the gross invasion of privacy or the fact that Facebook thinks we would be interested in seeing couples pages (uh no).

Even though we live in North America and pay much more attention to platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google+, I think it's also important to be informed of trends in other parts of the world as well. This article explores the success of LINE, a popular social networking site in Japan.

Looking at how a politician turns to reddit to see legislative advice. Showing how technology/social media is being used to engage the public on political issues- even the future of their governance.

A great resource for anyone interested in non-profit communication strategy and non-profit communication technologies

Instagram has been around for two years but it's really only taken off since the beginning of 2012. Since this is the first calendar year in which it's been a major social media player it is interesting to see the records it keeps breaking in terms of most popular day yet on Insta. In the past month both Hurricane Sandy and now Thanksgiving have broken the record. I can only imagine that X-mas next month will keep the records going - people love to Instagram food pictures.

Really interesting read about Instagram disabling its compatibility with Instagram - which officially has nothing to do with it being owned by Facebook. Especially interesting to read about the focus on financial gain. Social media is often hailed as bringing people together - but is it really just a flashy reinforcement of the structures that be?
