I just thought this was an easy explanation b/w the two. It explains how adaptive technology is the adapting of existing tools or technologies, but assistive technology is just basically a broad term for the technology in general whether it be adaptive, assistive, or rehabilitative . It lists examples in the article. This just kind of helped me to understand the difference and wanted to share it.

This is an interesting association called Adaptive Design Association that works with PT, OT, and parents to help make your own adaptive equipment out of cardboard and other resources.  You can design specific and client centered equipment that is very cost effective.     Truly amazing!

eSpecial Needs offers a large selection of adaptive equipment for children with disabilities and other special needs.

This is an awesome video narrated by an OT student who is a paraplegia.  Nicole gives a look into the adaptive equipment she uses to get around in her daily occupations.  This video shows car adaptations, standing machine, wheelchair cushions, and how she travels via airplane and taxi.  Nicole gives a good explanation of these devices.

I was just talking to a friend that works as a COTA on the home health setting yesterday about adaptive equipment. She was telling she is always having to fabricate adaptive devices for her patients because there are just certain things they need but cannot afford. Poverty is a huge issue especially with our elderly who are living on a fixed income. We will have to work with the supplies on hand. If we can't think of it,I am sure we can find it on Pinterest :)

Adaptive equipment for the car. This is beneficial for anyone with physical challenges getting in and out of the vehicle as well as adapting turn signals and other controls in the vehicle.

This one is for the kiddos! This is just a store page that is selling products so its not the most informative but I do think this is a great way to get a visual idea of the various types of adaptive equipment that can be used in a pediatric setting.

I am sure all of us have already designed our adaptive devices, but this journal has a few cool ideas that we could share with future patients. These are things found around the house that can be easily adaptable.

I think pinterest is a great place to get wonderful ideas to make your own assistive devices. This is cost effective for us as therapist and for our patients as well.
