A person's work environment should fit his or her capabilities as a worker.Good ergonomics prevent injury and promote health, safety, and comfort for employees.

This article talks about an Occupational Therapist role in teaching a client how to manage their lyphedema through complete decongestive therapy. By doing this a client can have independence and can reduce the need of a daily caregiver.

I found this an interesting run down of the treatment of a humeral fracture and how Occupational Therapy plays such an important role in the recovery process.

I thought this was an interesting read on the AOTA website regarding ergonomics because it discusses how an OT practitioner would actually be involved in this line of work.

When we think about aging in place, or at least when I do, we think about the home. I found this article really interesting because it discusses the driving and mobility in the neighborhood aspect. Driving gives people independence, feelings of freedom, and the ability to participate in meaningful occupations and social roles. This is so important to being able to live life to the fullest!

This would be a great article to share with a patient that has cancer or with their family member. It describes the OT's role in caring for someone with cancer and the many places where OT can be provided.

I thought this article went good with the topics we have been covering. All of the articles I found previous to this one were very long to read. I like this one because it is short and covers OT in UE Rehab. It discusses all of the areas that we address in this rehabilitation. It would be a good article for a client to read that is not to wordy. I also like the list of needs met by interventions in the article.

This web site explains hand therapy, common injuries, and treatment for those injuries. It gives examples of the different types of treatments and the injuries they can be used for. Excellent resource to refer back too.

I found this website that talks about services provided by this company that specializes in OT for UE amputees. I found it really cool that there are centers that specialize in just this. The only downfall I see is that there is only 5 centers in the whole US.

This story of Jacob LaFerriere, a burn victim gives back to his community and gives back by giving motivation to kids who have been burned.  I like this video because it shows him working with an occupational therapist and doing fun rehab activities.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of static resting splints in an early RA population. The study hypothesis was that there would be a difference in the change of hand function after 12 months in patients with early RA who received standardized occupational therapy plus static resting splints compared with standardized occupational therapy alone.

This on-line edition of Occupational Therapy in Oncology and Palliative Care edited by Jill Cooper does an excellent job explaining in layman terms the different aspects of cancer to include tumor classification, etiologies, symptoms, diagnosis and treatments. It then discusses the different reasons some OTs decide to work in this specialty and how the OT can better deal with the stresses they encounter in treating those with cancer. I would definitely read this in its entirety if I chose to work with cancer patients.

This article is from the AOTA. It describes the role of OT in helping those with breast cancer. The "survivorship" phase is when a person is trying to re-enter their life's role as care taker, bread winner, house keeper, etc. This lists information some types of interventions one might receive in different types of settings.

I like this website because they post the latest news about the drugs that could treat some form of cancer. All information about cancer (types, treatment, prevention). From this website I found out that every 3th person in United States gets cancer. Also we can read how to live with cancer (coping skills, advice, medical research and information about palliative care). There are also recommendations on how an occupational therapist may help with assistive devices or adapted techniques to help you perform these activities easier. I thought this website was really educational and helpful.

This article talks about psychosocial factors relating to patients recovering from burns. The occupational therapy practitioner plays an important role in this process. These patients may suffer from disfigurement which can lead to depression, low self-esteem and self-worth, anger, withdrawal, etc. These issues need to be addressed for the patient to have the best possible outcomes.

This story is about a firefighter who lost his arm fighting a fire. His arm was amputated and the he was fitted with a prosthetic. He worked with an OT and prosthetic forever! He wanted to be able to return to his dream job of fighting a fire! He worked very hard and he had his share of his ups and downs. I am not going to tell you all the ending, so please read it. It is not long at all and will take you 10 minutes at the max.
