It's been two years since we last visited this topic, which is just about enough time for the controversy over our previous selections to have just about died down. Since that last list was created, we've had some changes on the PC staff. First, Dan set sail for the Grey Havens so we asked Jason to come over from that other site. Then Charles revealed his treachery by moving to work on the 360 site so we rescued Jeff Haynes from the PS3 team and reacquainted him with the goodness that is PC gaming.

The first time I ever heard of the PC Engine was when a friend whose Chinese mate's uncle had imported one told me about it. Without having seen it, I just assumed it was some kind of Japanese computer for word processing's sake - not a console the size of a good sarnie, and certainly not one that ran cutting-edge games stored on credit cards. Any which way you sliced it, the PC Engine was something special. From five-player games and the eight-way d-pad sported by its controller to what was at the time easily the best console version of R-Type, NEC's machine was a little marvel. Shame, then, that hardly anybody in the UK had one (though, for some reason, everyone in France did).

In Japan, shortly after the introduction of Nintendo's Famicom (Japan's version of the NES), the electronics giant NEC entered into the videogame market with the introduction of their "next generation" system, known as the PC Engine (PCE). The PCE boasted a 16-bit graphics chip capable of displaying up to 256 colors on screen at once, at a number of resolutions. Although its CPU wasn't much more powerful that of the NES, its spectacular graphics chip and six-channel sound bettered the Famicom in every way. It utilized a sleek new card format (PCE games are either HuCards or Turbochips) to hold its software, rather than bulky cartridges. It was also the first console to boast a CD-ROM drive, for full orchestral soundtracks and even (gasp!) full motion video. The PC Engine was immensely popular in Japan, outselling the Famicom by a significant margin.

While horror might be a mainstay for console games today, there was a time when a home video game system didn't have enough power to run the terrifying graphics needed to create a rich and frightening universe. Nintendo's Virtual Console is a key component of the Wii, granting the system not just a little backwards compatibility but a whole lot of it. The enhanced graphics adapter (that's what EGA stands for) was a huge step ahead from CGA. For a short while, the PC had the pole position as far as graphics were concerned. I have been playing video games on my personal computer for at least twelve years, and in that time I have probably played hundreds of titles. Some games were fascinating at first, but quickly lost their appeal. Others, however, can stand the test of time, and are clearly true classics in the genre that I still have fun playing, many years after they were first published.
