I bought a Nintendo 64 the day it came out, and I've been a huge fan ever since. The N64 is my favorite console ever. It had amazing sound and video and, as always, Nintendo made some incredibly fun games for it. The jump from the Super Nintendo to the Nintendo 64 is probably the biggest upgrade of all time. Going from a 2D 10MHz system to a 3D 93.75 MHz system with CD-quality voices blew me away. When you've been used to Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 is unbelievable. Suddenly there were huge immersive 3D worlds to explore, and characters who actually spoke.

Most people probably grew up with console games; depending on your age, anywhere from the Nintendo 64 all the way back to the Atari 2600 and before. But some of us also started out in the pre-Windows world of PC gaming: a land of conventional memory, ZMODEM downloads, IRQ conflicts, and other things we don't miss. But we do miss the games, because when consoles were still maturing, the PC platform had some of the best and most entertaining games ever written. And for those of you who never played games in the pre-3D world: yes, DOS also stands for Disk Operating System. Yes, it's that thing you get when you type "cmd" into the Run bar, and yes, the whole computer used to look like that. Can you believe it?

Atari's first -- and last -- venture into handheld gaming might not have been commercially successful, but it was most certainly a special time in gaming. With hardware designed by the engineers of the Amiga, and a first party lineup from legendary Commodore-era developer Epyx, the Lynx would prove to be the beginning and end of a new age for Atari. The Lynx was slinging around 16-bit pseudo-3D while Nintendo's green-and-purple screens struggled to replicate NES games. It might have been the unique hardware design with unlimited sprite-pushing and hardware scaling, or simply the way it was so dominated by a strong first party line-up, but it's hard to ignore the cult appeal of Atari's handheld wonder.

The Nintendo 64 was home to some of the most innovative and revolutionary games of all time. A lot of the awesome games you see today wouldn't have happen if it wasn't for Nintendo and its first 3D system. The games that sold well became a Player's Choice title. They were repackaged with the Player's Choice label and sold at a discounted price. Here are the top ten Player's Choice games for the Nintendo 64.

The late 1990s and early 2000s were great times to be a Nintendo fan. That was because the company was releasing a number of classic games for the Nintendo 64, their first 3D console. Since I was twelve years old, I have grown to love the Nintendo 64, and though it has been discontinued, I still go back to it from time to time and play various games that I consider to be among Nintendo's greatest classics. This was Nintendo's last attempt to compete against the disk drive platforms with a cartridge platform. If Super Nintendo was only slightly better than the original NES then the N64 was light years ahead. entire 3D worlds could be rendered. Another part of the systems success was the expansion pak, a brand new more advanced processor that could be installed into the game to allow you to play more advanced games. Had the system lasted longer they may have introduced a second more advanced expansion pak. So what were it's five best games?

Nintendo took their sweet time in bringing a console to match the Saturn, Playstation and the other 3D "powerhouses" that were popping up in the console market.    And of course, back in the later half of the 1990's many of us made fun of Nintendo as they stuck with the cartridge format instead of joining in on the CD-ROM bandwagon and the multimedia revolution that came with it.  However, for all it's limitations, it is interesting to see some of the things that were capable on the N64 and its aging format.   There are also a number of great games that only Nintendo and Rareware could provide that you just won't find anywhere else.

For video game purists, more advanced technology does not necessarily mean a better game or a better gaming experience. Sometimes, the older games are still the best. The reason so many new games fail is because they lose sight of what a video game should be. Realistic 3D graphics are great, but if there is no decent story to back them up, if game play is too convoluted, or if failing one task sets you back 3 screens and 30 minutes, we won't want to play and we won't recommend the game to our friends. When we are looking for a video game, for the most part, what we want more than graphics is fun. It is, at heart, a game, right? With that in mind, here is a list of games that got it right.
